Parasol New Arrivals • June 10, 2008

Dear you,

We’ll keep it short and sweet for you today. However, we’re very excited to announce the arrival of a handful of goodies from the tape/art collective Night People label based out of Iowa City.

We are nursing our sunburns as the weather here, in C-U is in full “Sunblown” force. Speaking of Sunblown, today is the official release date for our pals Adam and Jeff’s (aka Gazelle) brand new album. And don’t forget our Slayer lovin’ brah Jonathan Scott drops his new Doleful Lions offering titled, “7” today, as well. Done yet? Nope. Rob and Bob Vickers, AKA The Incredible Vickers Brothers, celebrate the nationwide birth of their debut album "Gallimaufry". That sounds like a pretty tasty Parasol family cake, eh? If you haven’t already picked these up, get on it, friends.

Late,

Roy & Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Wooden Shjips "Vol. 1" (Holy Mountain) CD $13.50
Magnanimous Holy Mountain release of previously vinyl-only and mostly unavailable stupendousness from Left Coast, lo-fi, psych-o-naut messiahs. The only thing fuzzier than the epic, acid-fuzz-guitar-organ freakscapes contained within are these dudes’ short-term memories. OK, sure, it is intrinsically uber-similar to the limited bonus disc that came with initial copies of their debut full-length CD, but this fully-packaged official release tacks on tracks from The SOL (Summer Of Love) 45, to wit: a mega 11-minute maelstrom, first time ever on CD. Sound samples on our front page.

Jim's Pick of the Best New Nordic Music

Blood Music "Don Quite" (Make It Happen) CD $15.00
Second album from former First Floor Power dude Karl-Jonas Winqvist, the follow-up to Sing A Song Fighter!, his charming fizz-pop debut. Don Quite, named for a childhood misspelling, is a more melancholy affair, written after his grandfather’s passing last year. Still, it’s lilting, languid pop led by voice and piano, for fans of the croony, orchestral-pop sounds of Jens Lekman and Sufjan Stevens. Karl-Jonas sings in a voice imbued with child-like wonder and wild-eyed naiveté, backed by sweet harmonies, cavorting baroquely with saucy synths, strings and ebullient rhythms, the electric sound of joy, indeed. Don Quite features guest appearances by James Huggins (Of Montreal), Lars Skoglund (Laakso), Sara Wilson (First Floor Power), Andreas Söderström (ASS), Leo Svensson (The Tiny) and Simone Rubi (Rubies).. Sound samples on our front page.

13th Floor Elevators
The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators
PS, US For the first time in 40 years, here it is in dangerously powerful MONO, exactly as it was intended: the stupefying debut album by Texas' heroic psychedelic point-men, the 13th Floor Elevators, on Sundazed's uncannily accurate high-definition vinyl! The unearthly banshee howl of Roky Erickson, the blistering guitar of Stacy Sutherland and the demented electric jug of Tommy Hall haven't sounded this scary since their glory days in the third eye of the lysergic hurricane!

Allien, Ellen
Sool
PS, US Created in the deepest & darkest of Berlin's winters, 2007-2008, this is intended to be a valve, a loophole, a respite from the crazy summers into the introspection & hibernation of winter. The sounds of everyday life & snatches of whispers reveal themselves w/ field-recorded closeness, the beats are as soft & as near as a heartbeat, ambient synth sounds are as long & spacious as an arm stretching across a couch. RECOMMENDED!!

Askew, Ed
Rainy Day Songs
PS, US The first release of new material since Ed Askew/Ask the Unicorn (ESP-Disk, 1968). The scarcity of commercially available albums belies an artist in perpetual bloom- painter & songwriter poet. Lyrically, he bears a striking resemblance to Paul Goodman, the mid-20th century NYC poet, novelist, gestalt psychologist, & anarchist social theorist. If that's what makes his music such a hard sell for current labels & commercial audiences, it's also the source of its timelessness. Whether you choose to listen to it now or wait for the next round of "reissues" 40 yrs from now, this is music that will endure.

Babyof, Noa
From A Window To A Wall
PS, US Just as one individual looks to another for identity & support, so one song looks to the last for meaning; a place in the grand structure. This does what many before have done. She is a folk musician in the singer-songwriter tradition. She pays homage here, stretches boundaries there, & most often plays w/in the structures formed by the greats that preceded her. Very few have what it takes to make it on a stage where what separates the weak from the strong is neither record sales nor charisma, but the greatness of the songs.

Brother Kite, The/Plumerai
Split
PS, US Track Listing: Plumerai "Vacant Eyes". The Brother Kite "We Can Never Be Friends". LIMITED to 500 copies. Clear vinyl in see-thru package. An idea hatched during the recording of Plumerai's "Without Number" CD out on Silber Records. The thought was to strip away the pedals and even electricity and release a record that would simultaneously draw upon the band's ability to evoke emotions and utilize one of the band's noted strengths; the intimacy and power of Elizabeth Ezell's voice. After consideration they sought out The Brother Kite to record a track for the flipside. A Clairecords staple and another top-notch New England band known for their shoegaze influences, they seemed like a perfect match for the concept of stripping down their sound and writing an acoustic track.. Plumerai's "Vacant Eyes" relies more heavily on orchestration and layering of instruments such as acoustic guitar, reed organ, violin (arranged and performed by Clara Kebabian) and bells to accompany Ezell. While The Brother Kite's "We Can Never Be Friends" is a more basic track with acoustic guitars and a catchy vocal melody carrying the song. This stunning and beautiful record comes on coke bottle-clear vinyl and is limited to 500 copies.

Burning Star Core
Challenger
PS, US LP version, same as the CD on Hospital Productions. "While the Burning Star Core project has included much wider ensembles, Challenger is a direct solo composition of C. Spencer Yeh. This recording is perhaps Yeh's most revealing, unguarded work. Challenger is a composed work, not an improvisation, with each piece revolving around a central melodic theme, featuring field recordings, which serve as an audio diary. The sounds range from pure tonal mood to huge electronic crescendos. But what's most remarkable is the use of space, where parts come in then drop out to build up the emotion. When the piano sound crashes in 'Mysteries of the Organ,' it reflects a frustration with paradise, a rejection of perfection, a jolt of inexplicable throes of life. In contrast is the quiet, haunting 'Hopelessly Devoted,' which sounds like a love letter written to outer space. These make for an album that is both dynamic yet consistent as a full statement."

Byrds
Live At Royal Albert Hall 1971
PS, US VINYL VERSION!!!

$34.00

Byrds
Live At Royal Albert Hall 1971
PS, US From their earliest days as 12-string-wielding folk-rockers, to the thrilling psychedelic excursions of their raga-rock period to their 1968 birthing of country-rock, The Byrds were always accorded a hero's welcome in England. What better place to record founding Byrds member/guitarist/singer Roger McGuinn's new version of the band-featuring fretboard ace Clarence White, bassist Skip Battin and drummer Gene Parsons, than London's Royal Albert Hall! Rescued from a tape that had sat forgotten in McGuinn's climatized garage for decades, this stellar 1971 set, featuring live versions of the current band's studio faves ('Lover of the Bayou,' 'Chestnut Mare') as well as adventurous reworkings of Byrds classics ('Mr. Tambourine Man,' 'My Back Pages,' 'Eight Miles High,' 'So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star') might be the most accurate and stirring live performance yet of the legendary Los Angeles combo. By 1971, the guitar interplay of McGuinn and White had become a jaw-dropping highlight of their live performances, as had their stripped-down, acoustic mini-set and peerless four-part vocal harmonies. As McGuinn, in typically understated fashion, says of this new Sundazed release: 'It was a great night, so I'm happy there's a record of it!

Cannabis Corpse
Tube of the Resinated
PS, US This collects evil shredding & devilish melodies of ghoulish hunger, balanced out w/ steamrolling death metal grooves & set to an old-school battery of blasts & kick-work. Spidery bass lines & growling vocals relate ironic weed-laced tales of gore & murder (w/ a bit of heavy-handed humor), creating a reality that incl the existence of bloodthirsty bud monsters & mysterious death-dealing weed-cults. Reeking w/ pungent infectiousness.

Charlatans UK, The
You Cross My Path [deluxe edition]
PS, US Expanded version of the new album. The Charlatans' tenth studio album, You Cross My Path, is nothing less than a masterpiece - only the latest triumph, in a career which has been positively stuffed with them. It was one of the most talked-about records in recent years, before anyone had even heard a note of it. It was first released in early March in MP3 format, via alternative radio station Xfm's website. In a revolutionary move, The Charlatans were charging their fans not a penny to own and enjoy their latest music. You Cross My Path includes some of the most euphoric music the Charlatans have ever made - some of the most disturbed, too. Like on a classic Cure or New Order record, Blunt's basslines lead from the front, for a driving, danceable sound, which is both nostalgic and fiercely contemporary.

Children Of The Sixth
Root Race: Songs From The Source
PS, US This is a lost & found '73 recording of The Source family. These 12 songs were recorded live in the Hollywood Hills as a rehearsal for a concert date that Spirit of '76: aka YaHoWaH 13, The Savage Sons of YaHoWa, Yodship, & FireWaterAir, now known as Children of the Sixth Root Race, had at the Whisky. It's a miraculous missing piece of a positive musical movement. In summing up, Djin told us, "I know Father is behind this redeeming of the Spirit of '76 album & up to his old tricks again...YAHOWHA."

Clark-Hutchinson
A=MH2: Expanded
PS, UK As virtuoso musicians and members of Sam Gopal's Dream, Clark-Hutchinson (Andy Clark and Mick Hutchinson) were well-known to regulars at legendary London clubs such as UFO and Middle Earth when they decided to branch out as a duo. Recorded in two intense overnight sessions in May 1969, A=MH2 is a scorching blend of jazz, raga, blues and psychedelia that has long been established as one of the key recordings to have emerged from the UK psychedelic underground. It's presented here as a 2CD set, together with their March 1969 recording debut, an unreleased collection of acid blues that features some equally stunning musicianship. The package comes complete with detailed notes and previously-unpublished photos, making it the most comprehensive edition of this groundbreaking music ever assembled.

Cooley & Munson
In Debt
PS, SPAIN LP version. "Bill Cooley and Alan Munson were two friends in Santa Barbara, California, living their early 20s writing folk-rock songs for their pleasure. That was 1972, and they decided to put these songs into the studio, self-produce the album and press a tiny quantity of 500 pieces hoping it could help getting a contract with a major company. This never happened, as you would have guessed, and sure this fact helped making their sole album, In Debt, a major collectable item in the folk-rock and psychedelic rock listeners and collectors. Today, original copies of this record fetch quite interesting sums when changing hands in record fairs or internet auctions. Being a private pressing, you can easily imagine it's not a big production, but no care. This album has the right feel and you won't need anything else to make it one of your faves. All tracks are original compositions, and the style is very personal. It's folk-rock, but many tracks are quite psychedelic too, in their own way. But don't look close for influences, they will not come to mind that easily. Bill and Alan had their own psychedelic folk-rock style, and the raw, sometimes amateurish feel that these recordings have give the album the final distinctive touch. Never reissued before in any format, now here we come with a splendid reissue, with the collaboration of the guys."

I Am Your Bastard Wings
PS, US At the edge of an impossibly calm reservoir, face down among broken glass & apocalyptic debris, you have no identification... no recollection of how you ended up here. This duality is the thematic arc here. Forged w/ a sense of triumph & hope when everything else has been eradicated, this pendulates over the fine balance between creation & annihilation: at one second breathy, calm, & sparse; followed immediately by snaking melodies, unrelenting density & climactic cacophony. PS, US Members come from the HC/Crust scene, where they have a long history of playing in some of the genre's most influential bands. Evans, Mikal
A Jailhouse A Kingdom
PS, US It could be said that Evans has matured; evolved from a "Moody folk" novice into an "indie rock" artist. Evans' style is best summed up by an observation from one audience member - 'This reminds me of a really good PJ Harvey song.' To her credit Evans has sincerity by the bucket. Like her raspy voice, her melodies seem to prize honesty over prettiness.

Carlos composed and performed this piece live on several tours in the US/Europe/Japan all trough out 2006 and 2007, if you saw him live in those two years this is the piece he performed. This was the most complete version of it that made it to tape. Side B is a studio piece recorded live on a much larger modular synth, based around the same theme, but with structural and tonal variations not in the original composition. .This is pure psychedelic electronic music.

H.P. Lovecraft
H.P. Lovecraft II
PS, UK Having relocated to Marin County in Northern California in the spring of 1968, H.P. Lovecraft's second, and it must be said, superior album, appeared later that same year. Clearly most of the band members (with the exception of Jerry MacGeorge who returned to the band's native city of Chicago to be replaced by former Hezekiah alumnus, Jeff Boyan, who was not only a fine bass player, but who also contributed a distinctive vocal style along with George Edwards and Dave Michaels) thrived in their new location, and the Lovecraft became frequent attractions in nearby San Francisco, playing alongside some of the top Bay Area psych bands of the time. Moving south to L.A. later that year, the band recorded their second eponymous album that contained some fine moments of pure artistry. The sleepiness of tracks like "Spin, Spin, Spin," "Mobius Trip" and "Electrallentando" was reminiscent of It's A Beautiful Day's first album, and their fine version of "High Flying Bird" and "At The Mountains Of Madness" captured the band's outstanding vocal style, very much the hallmark of their first album, to perfection. H.P. Lovecraft II was reputedly the first major label album (both records were originally released on the Philips label) where all those involved in the recording were actually high on acid! The band effectively dissolved after this superb effort, and although various former band members tried to regroup on several occasions, it is by H.P. Lovecraft II and its predecessor, H.P. Lovecraft, that the band will be remembered. Housed in a numbered, limited edition of 1000 copies in a unique card wallet.

Harrisons
No Fighting In The War Room
PS, UK Debut album from hotly-tipped Sheffield four-piece Harrisons. Fans of earthy lyrics, northern accents, hard guitars and good old fashioned rock 'n' roll read on, but don't be too quick to pigeonhole -- Harrisons may hail from the same fertile scene that spawned the ubiquitous Arctic Monkeys, but this debut album is in a class of its own. Recorded in five weeks at Lincolnshire's Chapel Studios with producer Hugh Jones, whose prior credits include Echo And The Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes and The Stranglers, the album is a tour de force of British guitar music, recalling the slice-of-life lyrics of The Jam, the intensity of The Clash and the attitude of The Verve. The outcome is an album of contrasts, ringing with northern charm, blue-collar social commentary and a wealth of musical styles. Former single "Monday's Arms" is vitriolic disco, "Take It To The Mattress" has a dangerously infectious riff and "Blue Note" is a terrace anthem in the making. Elsewhere, "Man Of The Hour" is a taut exercise in post-punk, "Listen" is the album's lighters-aloft moment and "Come For Me" brings things to a dramatic, fist-clenching close. With this debut, Harrisons have delivered an album that's worthy of the weight of expectation heaped on them by fans and the press. Band members include: Adam Taylor (vocals), Ben Stanton (guitar), Mark White (drums) and Ashley Birch (bass). The bonus DVD disc features various videos and live tracks and more. The DVD is PAL format only, region free.

Hosaka, Akane
Niko Niko Denki Muzic
PS, FRANCE With her lunging rhythms and deliciously retro melodies, Akane Hosaka catapults us into a world of gleeful wallabies and drummer-boy monkeys. Her discovery of music came through song, and only later led to instrumental experimentation. References to her early influences, the 60s and 70s precursors of electropop are deliberate: there for all to see. Raymond Scott, Perrey & Kingsley or Yellow Magic Orchestra. Nevertheless her true inspiration is from the visual world and lies in graphic forms and architectural fantasy: Keiji Ito, Archigram or Bruno Munari. For her, these images evoke music that she then sets about transcribing. Naturally reserved, she's a perfectionist in her work. Seeing her in the studio is like watching a blacksmith in the smithy, as she bends her music into the required shapes. Her compositions are like pastel-colored soap bubbles in extra-bright Super 8.

Isol/Zypce
Sima
PS, US Digipak with 16 page booklet featuring the artist's illustrations. Isol and Zypce present Sima, their latest collaboration. Isol: singer, composer, ex-vocalist of the electronic pop band Entre Ríos, singer with the baroque group The Excuse and member of the synthpop American band Alsace Lorraine. She's also an internationally renowned illustrator of books and printed media. For the first time, she composes the melodies in the songs and writes their lyrics on this new record. Zypce: musician, composer. In 1994 he released his CD Nuevo Muerto (New Dead) on which he and his ensemble play his own works of contemporary classical music tainted with industrial reminiscences, although these categories are in fact very dubious labels. He has also composed music for the film, dance and theatre in Argentina and abroad and has performed his experimental compositions with pianist Adriana de los Santos, among others in concert. He builds his own musical instruments and has an extremely elaborate
approach to the stage factor. On this CD he composes and arranges the songs by being clearly faithful to his peculiar aesthetics though approaching a pop song format, always with very experimental results. Isol and Zypce are siblings, born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. About Sima: 11 tracks / Voice: Isol / Instrumental arrangements: Zypce / Lyrics: Isol / Music: Isol - Zypce (except "La primera vez" and "Vos me llamás", by Dani Umpi - Adrián Soiza) / Artistic production: Zypce (in "Vos me llamás": Zypce-Cecinini) / Mastering: Nicolás Cecinini. Sima: f. abyss, precipice, crag, depth, chasm.

Joan As Policewoman
To Survive
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "If To Survive is any indication, Joan Wasser's life after Real Life is calmer, but no less thoughtful, than it was before her beautifully stormy debut album. Real Life was a major statement, filled with a lifetime's worth of catharsis. To Survive doesn't try for that scope -- as the title suggests, these songs are about day to day concerns that are no less vital: aloneness, togetherness, love, hope, and righteous anger. However, Joan as Police Woman's "beauty is the new punk rock" aesthetic is used just as powerfully here, with the same kind of delicate bravery and strong vulnerability."

Koi Pond
Volcano (Cassette)
PS, US Koi Pond is a three piece from NYC made up of some generally awesome dudes. Erik Roper plays bass and is a legendary artist/illustrator who does work for numerous bands, labels and publications such as Arthur, Southern Lord etc. while also playing in other bands such as Under Satans Sun and Mattalama. Pete Vogal plays synth while also jamming in Bow Ribbons, and designs arwork for clothes, David Aron plays drums, is the perpetrator for Little Cakes Gallery, used to skateboard alot, makes rad visual artwork, and jams in USUN with Mark Borthwick and Hisham Bharoocha. Despite these dudes epic resumes, Koi Pond is epic all on its own. Volcano is all about cosmic grooves, deep often minimal, endless repetitions that slowly evolve into more psyched out blissed out trances. Roper and Arons tight rhythmic foundations create the perfect backdrop for Vogal's synth improvisations. This is a meditative listen that never gets old, it just keeps grooving on and on forever. Leone, Dominique
S-T
PS, NORWAY Dominique Leone wears many hats, only a few faces & has a hundred songs that you haven't heard. And yes, he's a him. He's a songwriter, producer, singer, lover, fighter... scratch that, he's one of a growing number of college-educated musical auteur with more than a slight command of pop history & theory chops, and writing songs for joyous, infatuated people. Perhaps some of them are a bit over stimulated. Perhaps some of them just like good melodies & strange chord progressions that still seem vaguely familiar. The music is catchy but ambitious; crafted but not sterile; interesting but not pretentious. It's just a lot of fucking fun.

Magik Markers
Boss
PS, US Limited vinyl version of the most Magik Markers album (CD is on Ecstatic Peace), on their very own label Arbitrary Signs. "Recorded in the cavernous dark of Echo Canyon West with producer Lee Ranaldo working the boards like a diviner, BOSS documents the Markers with a previously-unheard fidelity and orchestration. Idiosyncratic song structure and melodies interspersed with a destructive drum stomp are reminiscent of the early electrified blues of Junior Kimbrough, or the black hole rhythms of Kousokuya. In a 2005 interview in The Wire, Elisa Ambrogio said, 'I want [The Magik Markers] to concentrate on music and focus inward, to concentrate on our own language of sound.' BOSS stands as the Markers' first stab at getting to the meat of this ambition. With a mix of blues simplicity, an almost Sonny Sharrock wailing and a janky Americana punk reminiscent of Pat Place and Roky Erickson, Ambrogio avoids preciousness like a rash. On BOSS, a tent rises right out of the empty plain and we are thrust into a full-blown revival show with no audience and no lights; it is just Elisa preaching, Pete blowing Gabriel's horn, and the mad wind of the prairie blowing all around. They are each hand-screened individual works of art & very very limited."

Miller, Evan
S-T (Cassette)
PS, US Miller is back at it with a new tape for Night-People. This one cuts real deep, Miller at his most epic. The A side starts things up with deep echo's swimming around cut up tape manipulations, leading into chambers of drone with Miller's characteristic tonal vocals transitioning into a kind of finger picked sentimental raga. The B side offers up a real burner, perhaps Millers best straight acoustic number, a real beautiful complex side that plays between minimalistic somber portions and upbeat workouts. Morgen
S-T
PS, UK Singer/guitarist Steve Morgen and company (bassist Rennie Genossa, drummer Bob Maiman and rhythm guitarist Barry Stock) originally hailed from Long Island, New York. Signed by ABC's short-lived Probe subsidiary, their 1969 debut Morgen teamed them with producer Murray Shiffrin (Steve Morgen is given the co-production credit). After this superb debut, the entire band quite simply disappeared. If you're into heavy psych guitar, then this is for you. While Morgen had a competent, if limited voice, he was a truly amazing guitarist with the likes of Nick Saloman of The Bevis Frond becoming a staunch advocate of Morgen's status as a "psychedelic guitar hero." Tracks such as "Eternity In Between," "Welcome To the Void," "Of Dreams" and "Beggin' Your Pardon (Miss Joan)" were simply drenched with fuzz and feedback guitar. Underpinned by Maiman's powerhouse drumming (easily compared with Led Zeppelin's John Bonham) and suitably trippy lyrics, you're looking at a pseudo-classic slice of psychedelia that largely explains the huge asking price of an original copy. This numbered, limited edition CD is housed in a unique gatefold card wallet.

Munson, Alan
Good Morning World
PS, SPAIN LP version. Limited 500 copies vinyl pressing, comes with an insert with liner notes and unseen photos. "Alan Munson, the songwriter of Cooley-Munson duo, continued the folk-rock way. It took him some time, but in 1975 he was ready for what is (for him, and for me too), his best '70s work. Good Morning World includes nine original, acoustic based songs with a mellow psych and folk rock sound across this album. Meaningful and understandable lyrics, delivered by 'close-up' lead vocals, and background harmony vocals. Instruments played on the album include 6 string acoustic guitar, 12 string acoustic guitar, electric bass and percussion. Song arrangements include multiple guitar harmony lead solos and fills."

Mushroom
Early One Morning
PS, UK Original copies of this incredible album by Mushroom, the Dublin duo consisting of Pat Collins (violin) and Joe O'Donnell (everything else), fetch hundreds of pounds on the rare occasions that they actually come up for sale. Musically, Early One Morning...., originally released in 1973 on the Hawk label, is a real one-off, combining brilliant, heavy progressive rock and psychedelic Irish folk with blazing guitar leads battling with fiddle attacks. The results are awesome, fully justifying the hefty price tag of an original. A monster of an album! This numbered, limited edition CD is housed in a unique gatefold card wallet.

"The Dream" was created without pressure from record companies or the studio. As with previous albums, the basic Orb nucleus is joined by guest singers and players, including SYSTEM7's STEVE HILLAGE (GONG), who goes back to the earliest recordings, Battersea toaster-singer Eric Walker aka "The Corporal" and vocalists Aki Omori [Japanese singer who appeared on 2001's "Cydonia"], singer Andy Caine from the W.A.U.! days, and renowned soulstress Juliet Roberts. Pocahaunted/Robedoor
Hunted Gathering
PS, US There's a savage battle raging in the hallowed streets of Los Angeles, being fought by prehistoric megaliths spewing lava from their mouths. These acid-tongued shamans are interested in one thing and one thing only, and that's to raze this city to the ground. Okay, perhaps it's not so apocalyptic, but hot off the heels of opening for Sonic Youth, dirt worshippers Robedoor and their native sisters Pocahaunted have unleashed an army for the ages with Hunted Gathering. Drones painted with black holes collapse under their own weight while the archangelic voices of Pocahaunted birth a brand new world of spirit decay. Hunted Gathering is both a split release and a collaboration. Each band offers up their own malfeasance while collaborating on the epic final eponymous track. The union of these two groups is a natural combination. Two members are married and run the Not Not Fun label together and they share amps and a practice space, for example. But there's also something about both that is visceral and raw. Robedoor's subsonic doom is washed down with a smooth chaser of Pocahaunted's reverberating soul sounds. Recorded by the inimitable Bobb Bruno at the NNF/Bored Fortress studio space across many moons in 2007 and mastered by Yellow Swans' Pete Swanson, Hunted Gathering is an essential feast for fans of doom-infused drones and Stevie Nicks. These hunting & gathering songs from the Eagle Rock air also feature appearances by the aforementioned Bruno as well as Changeling mastermind, Roy Tatum. Climb the totem pole and let these mutant beasts put you under their psychosis spell. Hunted Gathering is full of antiquated sounds soaked in electric mud. Robedoor and Pocahaunted are your brothers and sisters in conjuring and the gatekeepers to a lost universe of sonic enchantment.

Ponies In The Surf
See You Happy
PS, US Ponies In The Surf is quietly one of a kind. Siblings and self proclaimed indie music nerds Alex & Camile live in Cambridge, MA though they're originally from Bogota, Columbia. The Ponies build perfect soft pop songs with elements Samba, Beatles, the more sophisticated folk set, the Pop Vocal traditionalists and they're very much akin to The Violent Femmes and Johnathan Richman in terms of song craft, a subtle humor and vulnerability. The Ponies' work is uniquely comforting and highly addictive. It is served with a rare passion and grace. It evokes nostalgia for the above mentioned while remaining firmly planted in its own special, almost timeless place. "After playing in rock bands for some time, Alexander McGregor decided at some point that he simply wanted to make some music that could even appeal to his grandmother. Joined by his sister Camille, the duo plays stripped-down folkish type music that sounds like it could have been created at any point in the past 40 years yet still feels fresh." --ALMOST COOL. "These powerfully quiet traditionalists perform folk songs with a pan-American touch. It's only a shame that music this delicate and warm doesn't garner more notice." -POPMATTERS

Radio Dept.
Freddie and the Trojan Horse (ON SALE)
PS, SWEDEN "It's time - once again and more clearly than before - to show our standpoint. 'Freddie and the Trojan Horse' is about the untruthfulness of the Swedish right-wing government and how the leading party seized power by portraying itself as supportive of the workers." -THE RADIO DEPT. In the beginning of 2007 people started talking about new material from The Radio Dept. There was even a rumour going on that they were working on two albums simultaneously and that both would be released in May the same year. In other words; two albums merely one year after the release of the previous album "Pet Grief". Those who had followed the band for a few years and know how they work probably suspected this would not happen. "Freddie and the Trojan Horse" is a first taste of their upcoming album "Clinging to a scheme" due to be released on September 10. The new songs are influenced by minimalist post-punk, krautrock, and repetitive "motorik" beat and ambient noise. Maybe "Freddie and the Trojan Horse" doesn't represent the upcoming album very well. But what do we know!? If the truth's to be told we haven't heard that much more of there, almost mythical, new recordings than anyone else. Still, we're have no worries whatsoever. We're only full of expectation and belief in the songs. Whatever they sound like, we're confident that they'll be of the same amazing quality as "Freddie..." The Radio Dept. "Freddie and the Trojan horse" is right now at #1 at Elbo. ws which compiles more than 2800 blogs. TRACK LIST: 1. Freddie and the Trojan horse 2. Closing scene 3. The room, Tarzana 4. After that night Ali gave me a copy of her killer first SHV tape - Endless Love, on the Rare Youth label. SHV is never the same thing twice, always performative, always sitting on the edge of failure and greatness, always pushing the boundary. I've seen SHV jump through a ceiling to start a set, tie up a whole audience, stick a dude in an oven, and generally just rock the fuck out always. Sleeping Years, The
We're Becoming Islands One by One
PS, UK The Sleeping Years is the new project from Dale Grundle, formerly of the Catchers. Now signed to innovative indie-label Rocket Girl, the debut album "We're becoming Islands One by One", is a gorgeous exploration of melody and melancholy. A gifted lyricist, Dale's exquisitely crafted songs tell of people trying to stay connected in a world seemingly designed to keep them apart. He is heavily influenced by the language and culture of his home in Ireland, providing a distinct character to this highly personal collection of songs. Born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland to an Irish father and a Scottish mother, Dale started his first band Catchers while at school. Their first single 'Cotton Dress' came out on Setanta Records and became single of the week in Melody Maker. Their debut album 'Mute' was recorded with Mike Hedges in France. Catchers went on to tour with Pulp, Edwyn Collins, The Divine Comedy, Dr. John and Oasis. Their second album 'Stooping to Fit' was recorded by Nick Drake's arranger Robert Kirby. Dale started his solo project The Sleeping Years with a trilogy of EPs in 2007, 'You and Me Against The World', 'Setting Fire to Sleepy Towns' and 'Clocks and Clones'. These were very well received and are very much living proof that independent singles do sell-out. They also garnered critical acclaim, featuring on BBC Radio 1's Introducing, the Guardian's writer's play list and on the cover mount of Rolling Stone Magazine. Songs have been heavily played on Gideon Coe's 6music show and on French radio, having been championed by France's answer to John Peel, Bernard Lenoir. 'We're becoming Islands One By One" is poised to become an instant, yet timeless classic with a refreshingly dynamic twist on acoustic song writing. Dale performs all vocals and guitars, not to mention bass, Hammond organ, Rhodes piano and e-bow parts and was joined by cellist Michelle So and Tom Page from Rothko on drums. The Guardian: 'his voice breaks exquisitely between hope and despair in songs that the acoustic guitar was invented for' Dazed and Confused: 'a one-man show that owes his lilting metaphysical lyricism to the likes of Nick Drake, Elliot Smith and John Martyn. It's good to know that there are people like him out there.

Sloan
Parallel Play (ON SALE)
PS, US Parallel Play is a continuation of the musical concepts put forth on their last album and a further exploration of the band's four-songwriter dynamic. A term taken from the science of developmental psychology, Parallel Play is a behavior seen in young children in which they enjoy independent activities in the company of other children, something the four boys in Sloan know a lot about. As per their unique musical modus operandi, the members of Sloan wrote songs independently and then joined forces in the studio to produce yet another album of timeless, guitar-driven pop. For Sloan, Parallel Play proves once again that four times the songwriters equals four times the rock. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "At 13 songs and 37 minutes, Parallel Play feels designed as if was designed a counterpoint to its 2006 predecessor Never Hear The End of It, an efficient machine next to the sprawling canvas of that hour-long 30-song neo-masterpiece. That it is, but Parallel Play isn't quite an abandonment of the White Album aesthetics of Never Hear, where all four members of Sloan played off their individual personalities to create a larger tapestry. Rather, Parallel Play condenses all that winding exploration into a tight, colorful blast of sound and song - and one that is seamlessly sequenced just like its big, brawny cousin."

Tiersen, Yann
Tabarly (with CD)
PS, FRANCE LP + FREE CD. For the 10th anniversary of Eric Tabarly's death, a famous skipper from Brittany (Northwest of France), the director Pierre Marcel and Galatée Film release a biography of this unsurpassed sailor on June, 11. Galatée Film did not hesitate at all to suggest another exceptional Breton (from Brittany), i.e. Yann Tiersen to compose the soundtrack of this outstanding film. As usual, Yann Tiersen did not just make a music that illustrates the film, but he made a full-fledged, independent, personal and powerful music. Yann made an instrumental music that gives pride of place to the piano and to the intimate melodies that will delight his biggest fans. This record is a kind of bridge in the artist's evolution, from his first loves to his new folk trend. Under this peaceful, mastered and warm movie soundtrack, lays actually a new album. After Eric Zonca's "la vie rêvée des anges", "Amélie from Montmartre" and "Goodbye Lenin", Yann Tiersen composed his fourth soundtrack and as the previous films, it is a safe bet that it will be a success! The record has been initially made for vinyl and the mastering has been made from this vinyl. The sound is therefore warm and powerful.

The band recorded about 150 songs on a 4-track tape recorder during 1973-74. A cross-section was released on a demo album (25 copies). The band introduction on this demo album says: 'Excuse the technical shortcomings. What we want you to notice are the songs, the sound, and the fact that we are exactly what the market is looking for, what the upcoming rock generation is looking for..' Listening to that album you will surely agree. The musical spectrum goes from straight 2-minute psychedelic beat/garage tunes with harmony vocals, pounding organ, excessive fuzz reminding to The Seeds, Stooges Yardbirds, ... over to distorted 'Zapparesque' hard rock cuts into raga-stoner acid folk! The Trizo 50 music continues the outstanding, individual and very surprising songwriting of Phantasia. This release contains 22 original cuts (4 bonus tracks to our LP version) -- all songs have been carefully remastered and were taken from the original mastertapes.

U.S. Christmas
Eat the Low Dogs
PS, US The music cannot be ignored. It hurts people, physically & mentally. It stirs intense feelings of pain, frustration, loss, fear, & occasionally euphoria. Snare drums rattle, amps hum & pop, dogs bark in the background. But that's the way it always sounds, & the band doesn't see any point in changing a method that works. Many a drunken bystander has been drawn to the theremin's magic antennae.

West Coast Consortium
Mr. Umbrella Man
PS, UK Subtitled: A Collection of Demos 1967-1969. "West Coast Consortium's late 1960s 45s were sophisticated, lavishly-orchestrated, close harmony pop affairs. At heart, though, they were a garage psychedelic pop band -- as can be heard on Mr. Umbrella Man, which assembles the pick of the four demo albums they made between 1967 and 1969. Now heard for the first time, this astonishing cache of recordings reveal that, left to their own devices, West Coast Consortium ditched the brass and strings arrangements of their singles in favor of Mellotrons, fuzz guitars, Vox Continental organs and wah-wah pedals, while hitherto unreleased nuggets like 'Santa Monica Bay,' 'Aimie (Sing Your Song For Me)' and the woozy 'Mr. Umbrella Man' show a parallel debt to the lo-fi, DIY approach of the Beach Boys circa Smiley Smile and Friends."

PS, UK Recorded in 1969, this superb rural rock collection has been described as "an extra Buffalo Springfield album" because it includes, for mysterious reasons, six rare songs by Neil Young and Steven Stills. These were composed and demoed during Buffalo Springfield's heyday, but not released by them. Elsewhere there are three tracks penned by leader Jerry Tawney and a classy cover of Delaney & Bonnie's "God Knows I Love You." With tasty guitar leads and harmony vocals throughout, this lost gem is a treat for all fans of West Coast rock.

Youngbloods, The
Elephant Mountain
PS, US "Elephant Mountain, the magnetic third album by the Youngbloods, is commonly looked upon as the pinnacle of the legendary Bay Area combo's abundant eight-year career. From its spine-chilling opening track -- the strains of a somber Appalachian fiddle permeating 'Darkness, Darkness' -- the listener is inexorably sucked into psychedelic quicksand by the haunting vocals of Jesse Colin Young, whose plaintive cry to 'hide the constant yearning for things that cannot be' proves mournfully irresistible. In addition to Young's songwriting masterpiece, the 1969 album also spotlights a sharp, country-rocking vocal duet ('Smug') by Young and recently-departed singer Jerry Corbitt, as well as the jazzy interplay between electric keyboard whiz Banana and the locked-in groove of drummer Joe Bauer during magical instrumental 'On Sir Francis Drake.' More songwriting gems loom like sacred totems on this landmark longplayer, including Young's signature ballads 'Sunlight,' 'Quicksand' and 'Ride The Wind.' It's the Youngbloods at the top of their game, indelibly writing their names in the ledger of consummate San Francisco rock 'n' roll."

Action Biker
Hesperian Puisto (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 24TH)
PS, SWEDEN It really is time for Action Biker's first solo album! It has now been six years since she emerged as an artist doing fun and popular live shows and releasing CD-R's in the indie pop scene of Gothenburg, Sweden, which included people like Jens Lekman and The Honeydrips. Since then, Sarah Nyberg Pergament has been involved in other projects, such as Flow Flux Clan, Kissing Mirrors and The Dreamers, whose record "Day For Night" has received great acclaim from different places around the world. Over the years, Sarah has also performed lots of Action Biker shows (some, as an opening act for Le Tigre and The Embassy), contributed to recordings with Lars Blek (The Field), Differnet and The Honeydrips, and all this time, new recordings with Action Biker have popped up on compilations and singles. In brief, when "Hesperian Puisto" finally is released, it means the début of someone with a lot of experienceŠ The record is named after the Hesperian park in Helsinki, Finland, where Sarah lived for a while. She describes her music as baroque on synthesizers. It is pop music built on complex naivety - altogether very accessible music with distinct vocals and a crispy, sweet, analogue sound. Two great-looking videos are also included on the CD. References and Influences: Young Marble Giants, Broadcast, Dislocation Dance, Moondog, Virna Lindt, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Antena, Francoise Hardy, Saint Etienne, Brian Eno, Ghost Box, Stereolab, Fred Astaire, Maurice Ravel, ESG, Komeda, Cluster, Flying Lizards, Syd Barrett, The Passions, St Christopher, John Barry, Can, Human League, Colleen, Marine Girls, Eric Dolphy, Telex, George Delerue, The Wake, Kraftwerk, Lori & The Chameleons, Differnet.

On top of that, they made their debut on the Billboard charts in the first week of release, peaked at #3 on the CMJ Top 200, and sold out several clubs nationwide on their fall 2007 tour. With the Like It or Not EP, the band finally records "One Heavy February" and "Beef in Box," which are two long-time crowd favorites from their live shows, to accompany the single version of "Like It or Not". Black Sun Ensemble
Across the Sea of Id: The Way to Eden (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 8TH)
PS, US Quite possibly the final BSE release after an illustrious career of nearly 25 years. It marks a return to the beloved semi-acoustic style of their first few releases, and also - due to public demand! - contains no vocals. It is a mixture of new readings of past tracks & new compositions. The new material offers a singular, dreamy vision of BSE's potentially final works. The two title tracks, Across the Sea of Id and Eden Song, are reflective, yet hallucinatory explorations into Jesus Acedo's unique compositional & melodic sensibility. While Angel de la Guardia has a refined yet explosive rock swagger, it is balanced by the meditation Perelandra & La Paz. The CD also contains a video of the band performing the signature BSE piece "Dove of the Desert"
