Ring ring,

Well, as we revisit yet another Tuesday those-there "New Release" Gods have yet again clobbered us with too many noteworthy joints for us to spend all of our hard earned dollars on. Ok, we’ll leave you be and let you get to the scavenger hunt down yonder. With that said, take a look at the list and hit us up if anything catches your eye.

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Notwist "The Devil, You + Me" CD $11.50 (Domino)
Notwist "The Devil, You + Me" Deluxe CD $15.50 (Domino)

Pre-order the vinyl...
A more organic and acoustic endeavor and, dare-we-say-it, stronger? front-to-back than its celebrated predecessor, Neon Golden, playing up the warmth of the songs and playing down the brittle rhythms; a sweetly melancholy possession/exorcism that trades some of their trademark "Pick Up the Phone" despair for what sounds a lot like hopefulness; while still intimate and personal, moreso maybe in this lusher, indie-orchestral setting. Made by humans for other humans, another great leap forward, which is nice. [more detail]

Thrillsville: Parasol staff's weekly picks

Jim picks: Endless Boogie - Focus Level CD Can I love a band that sounds like Tres Hombres-era ZZ Top meets Krautrock? Under the "right" "circumstances", it's only right and natural.

Roy picks: Notwist - The Devil, You + Me CD The Devil, You + Me is an extraordinarily mind-boggling album, progressively building mature melodies tied-together with ghostlike electronics.

Paul picks: Notwist - The Devil, You + Me CD
Mach schnell!

Geoff picks: Monks, The - Monk Time [expanded re-issue]CD

Angie picks: Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose CD ...several years ago this album was stuck in the car cd player...literally! I saw Loretta live in Tx over the weekend
I'm putting it back in!

When a dama named Juanita calls him down to Sonora, Eddy rides across the Rio Bravo and never looks back. He expects to come up against brawls, rustlers of his dogs, and even the sadistic Amazon. But on his first day in Mexico, with the cacti in flower and the snakes far away in their summer bowers, nobody could have convinced Eddy that, at the end of many ugly and erotic encounters along dusty roads full perils, he would end up.

Bowerbirds
Hymns For A Dark Horse
PS, US Only once every ten years or so does one hear a new band this good, this bursting with ideas, this audibly in love with musicŠ It is beyond stunning. This band is the complete package." Ears tend to perk up when a record review sings praises like these, especially when the praises come from the Mountain Goats' John Darnielle, as they did recently on his Last Plane to Jakarta website hailing the BOWERBIRDS' debut album, "Hymns for a Dark Horse." DEAD OCEANS is overjoyed to be sharing the sounds of Bowerbirds with listeners worldwide. "Hymns for a Dark Horse" was originally released in July of 2007 on BURLY TIME RECORDS, and now will be issued in an expanded form featuring TWO BONUS TRACKS. Upon the initial release of the album, Pitchfork graced it with an 8.4 and "recommended" stamp of approval, saying: "[Bowerbirds] churn out deceptively pleasing folksongs about plants and animals and the unforgivable things we do to them... hypnotically pretty and a little bit weird, characteristics of the very best kind of Americana music. Bowerbirds do for backyards what the Hold Steady's done for parking lots-- translated place into sound."

S-T [re-issue]
PS, US Available again... ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "This kicking side project by members of Cibo Matto and Russell Simins of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion is filled with funky licks and punk's manic energy. What is most impressive is the rich blend of textures to this freewheeling journey. At the center are Miho Hatori's high-flown vocals against Simmons' paranoid growl. Often hilarious and consistently groovy; in a word, dynamite."

Childs, Hayden
Richard & Linda Thompson - Shoot Out The Lights (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US Description: In the fall of 1980 Richard and Linda Thompson (of Fairport Convention fame) had recently been dumped from their record label and were on the verge of divorce. Somehow they overcame these miserable circumstances and managed to make an album considered by many to be a masterpiece. Shoot Out The Lights puts the album-from the personal history driving the songs, to the recording difficulties they encountered and the subsequent fall-out-in context. This is a brilliant, emotional book about a brilliant, emotional album.
Authors: Hayden Childs is a researcher and policy expert for the Texas Legislature. He's also an aspiring novelist, an occasional essayist, and a hardcore Richard Thompson fanatic. He contributed to the book Lost in the Grooves and is co-editor of the online music magazine The High Hat.

Clouds
We Are Above You
PS, US Boston's Clouds have followed up last year's "Legendary Demo" with an even bigger, better, and more brilliant slab of hot rock action. Led by the estimable and inimitable Captain Adam McGrath, who brings his impeccable musical pedigree (see: fellow Hydra Head all-stars Cave In) to bear upon this lofty enterprise, Clouds deliver all the anthemic choruses, white-hot licks and psychedelic grandeur that anyone could ever possibly hope to cram into a single album, at least one made by mere mortals. ALARM MAGAZINE: "An adventure in hard rock. From 70s blues-rock riffs to hardcore punk to macho stoner metal, Clouds is equally good at all of it."

Crystal Stilts
S-T
PS, US The Crystal Stilts hail from the same small-but-noisy Brooklyn pop gang as the Vivian Girls (of which the two bands share a drummer) and the perfectly shambolic Cause Co-Motion, If The Pin Group met The Jesus & Mary Chain and had a bastard baby that loved 1966, that might give you some idea of where the Crystal Stilts sound like. Other Music this limited 12" aptly: "Primitive girl group stand-up drums and reverb-heavy melodic surf/rockabilly-soaked guitar lines, the four songs on the EP are the perfect amalgam of the pop immediacy of C86/Flying Nun and a DIY take on the spacious '60s sounds of Spector and Nitzsche."

Daniel, Drew
Throbbin Gristle: 20 Jazz Funk Greats (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US Description: In 20 Jazz Funk Greats Drew Daniel (of the experimental band Matmos) creates-through both his own insights and exclusive interviews with the band-an exploded view of the album's multiple agendas: a series of close readings of each song, shot through with a sequence of thematic entries on key concepts, strategies, and contexts (noise, leisure, process, the abject, information, and repetition). This is a smart and unusual book about a pioneering band.
Authors: Drew Daniel is one half of the acclaimed electronic group Matmos - successful in their own right, and also as collaborators with Bjork. Drew has taught the history of electronic music at the San Francisco Art Institute and a sound art seminar at Harvard. He has just moved to Baltimore, where he now teaches in the English Department at Johns Hopkins University.

Darnielle, John
Black Sabbath: Master Of Reality (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US Description: Black Sabbath's Master of Reality has maintained remarkable historical status over several generations; it's a touchstone for the directionless, and common coin for young men and women who've felt excluded from the broader cultural economy. John Darnielle hears it through the ears of Roger Painter, a young adult locked in a southern California adolescent psychiatric center in 1985; deprived of his Walkman and hungry for comfort, he explains Black Sabbath as one might describe air to a fish, or love to an android, hoping to convince his captors to give him back his tapes.
Author: John Darnielle is the singer and songwriter otherwise known as the Mountain Goats.

Endless Boogie
Focus Level
PS, US This NYC four-piece started out as an "old man hobby" and turned into the best psychedelic rock 'n' roll band in the city (maybe country, possibly world). Endless Boogie jam, then jam some more. They lock in grooves so tight there's no escape - like entering a black hole, that last second stretches out forever. The only thing keeping them from living up to their name is the physics of the compact disc. The perfect soundtrack to hot summer nights. Hanging out in the basement. Smoking figs in the yard.
PAPER MAG: "Meet Endless Boogie, the best-kept secret in New York's rock scene. They have the best name (taken from John Lee Hooker's 1971 album), the best onstage vibe and the best head-nodding jams. In a sea of derivative and freshly outfitted young bands, Endless Boogie -- with a combined age of 169 and members who count Canned Heat as one of their influences -- doesn't have a big agenda. They just want to rock with you, preferably all night long... The band's sound is a meltdown of metal, psychedelic and classic rock with a heavy dose of riffage, a kick-ass beat and super-cryptic lyrics. It's thunderous and mellow at once." PITCHFORK: "Swinging in a hammock pegged between D and E, the band call forth a viciously single-minded troglodyte fog of psych-wah-blues-rock that hurtles past Blue Cheer (and Blueshammer) comparisons into their own hand-carved grotto of miracles."

Fabulous Diamonds
S-T
PS, US Adorably known to friends and family in Australia as Jarrod and Nisa, The Fabulous Diamonds' beguiling truck is a mesmerizing mix of synth, dub, and percussion, woven around honey-ache vocal stylings recalling (in spirit) past Aussie noisemakers Scattered Order or Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast, as well as those of Augustus Pablo, Young Marble Giants, and Suicide. Their one previous release was a 7-inch co-released by Nervous Jerk and Misteltone, and it garnered praise from the Blogosphere and a smattering of airplay on discerning freeform radio stations around the US. This LP on Siltbreeze has been in the works for the better part of a year; its release coincides their first American tour (along with Siltbreeze labelmates, Psychedelic Horseshit).
"Borne out of a tradition that lies somewhere between classic dub, experimentalism and post punk, Fabulous Diamonds foreground a style (unique) and substance (intriguing) that come together in a hypnotic frenzy. Assembled amidst high levels of delay, this Melbourne two-piece creates a truly bewildering mix.... It's the hit you've been waiting for throughout this post post-punk melee we live in. Fabulous Diamonds present a world drenched in discordant jams stemming from a parallel universe of sonic intensity, one that picks up on the heritage embedded in post-punk, but recreates rather than rehashes the influence." --Eliza Sarlos, Mess + Noise

Ferris, D.X.
Slayer: Reign In Blood (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US Description: Issued on America's premier rap label at the peak of the thrash metal movement, Slayer's controversial Reign in Blood remains the gold standard for extreme heavy metal, a seamless 29-minute procession of ten blindingly fast, apocalyptic songs. The first English book about Slayer explores the creation of the most universally respected metal album and its long road to the stores, through original interviews with the entire band, producer Rick Rubin, engineer Andy Wallace, cover artist Larry Carroll, and Def Jam insiders from Russell Simmons to M.C. Serch. From Tori Amos to Pantera's Phil Anselmo, dozens of fans and artists discuss the record's ongoing impact and Slayer's status in the small fraternity of rock's greatest groups.

Flaherty, Paul & Randall Colbourne
Bridge Out!
PS, US Don't call it a comeback. "Bridge Out!," the first release in almost a decade by the outlaw duo of saxophonist PAUL FLAHERTY and percussionist RANDALL COLBOURNE, is better thought of as a renewal, a reawakening of a collaboration which has lain dormant for too long. Joining forces in the late 1980s, these two New Englanders released over a dozen uncompromising albums of avant-garde jazz on their own and other labels that have since vanished into legend. Since then, Flaherty has expanded across the world stage in improv, out-rock and noise (with Chris Corsano, Thurston Moore, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Wally Shoup, etc.) while Colbourne pursued private study. Together again, they've created eight instant compositions of coiling sax lines and polyrhythmic patterns that commemorates the past celebrates the new. Includes liner notes by Nick Cain.

Haunted George
Pile O' Meat
PS, US Second LP by terrifying one man band alter ego of Steve Pallow (ex- Beguiled, Necessary Evils). Louder and catchier than "Panther Howl", the new LP "Pile O' Meat" features more roots raunch tales of murder, torture and depravity. The Mojave Desert-dwelling one man band's new album has 13 original songs as well as covers of Johnny Horton ("Broken Hearted Gypsy") and Pat Boone ("Moody River").Ê "A strange one-man grovel in graveyard dirt by Steve Pallow (ex-Necessary Evils). It totally delivers on the failed promise of an album I once had by a guy calling himself "The Singing Mortician." It's kinda like the Zacherle/Bryan Gregory duo album you always dreamed of." -ÊByron Coley & Thurston Moore BULL TONGUE / ARTHUR MAGAZINE

Head Like A Kite
There Is Loud Laughter Everywhere
PS, US "There Is Loud Laughter Everywhere," HEAD LIKE A KITE'S second full-length album, and first for MUSH, is an expert blend of electronic rock production and pure pop-songcraft built on a bed of pillaged found-sound from cities the band visited on their 2006 US tour. No stranger to sharing the stage with big names on national and international turf, ringmaster Dave Einmo has assembled some of Seattle's finest for the album including members of The Long Winters, Smoosh, Radio 4, Crooked Fingers, and Preston School Of Industry. Whether it be guest vocals from Asya Smoosh and Graig Markel, added inspiration from touring drummer Trent Moorman, or the production of Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine) each track is flavored with the perfect additions to the epic songwriting and big-beat electronic production that is Head Like A Kite's forte. "There Is Loud Laughter Everywhere" strikes the balance between art and craft and is the finest sonic road-trip in the Mush catalog.

Impossible Shapes
The Impossible Shapes
PS, US THE IMPOSSIBLE SHAPES have been merrily music making - mostly under the radar - for a decade now. With this release the band has recorded songs that were flushed out over many live performances over many tours all across the globe. This album is their pinnacle song mound that could have been issued by Zapple, if times had been different. At the root these four long-hairs are a pop band - kinda like how Byrds became a meta group - who've been strained through British folk as well as the whole post/beat/mystic literate gob. Songwriter Chris Barth translates a cosmological view as psychedelic nursery rhymes or rock n roll cracked into free form strata.

Mount Analog Feat Karl Blau
That's How I Got to Memphis
PS, US MOUNT ANALOG is the solo project of Grammy Nominated producer TUCKER MARTINE. In this recording, record producer Martine (the Decemberists, Laura Veirs, Sufjan Stevens, Mudhoney), and his talented cast of Mount Analog--STEVE MOORE(Earth, Sunn0))))), JON HYDE, LAURA VEIRS and BRUCE WIRTH pay tribute to Nashville style in its classic country aesthetic circa 1972. With Martine having grown up in Nashville, this single could be construed as a shout-out to his songwriter father Layng Martine, Jr. who's songs have been recorded by Elvis, the Pointer Sisters, Bo Diddley, Reba McEntire, Billy "Crash" Craddock and many more. It was the Tom T. Hall version of "That's How I got to Memphis" that first caught Martine's attention as a teenager, but folks like Lee Hazlewood, Buddy Miller and Bobby Bare have all made the song their own since. "I am such a huge fan of Karl's, I knew that he was the one to help our version stay true to the spirit of the original version I loved so much, while shining the light on it from a different angle," Martine states.

Mueller, Jeff
Fold And Perish
PS, US VINYL VERSION!!!
Monitor
LP
$10.25

Mueller, Jon
Strung
PS, US Peripatetic composer, performer, improviser, and designer JON MUELLER is a busy guy, and both the rock and experimental music scenes are the richer for it. As a drummer he propels the ecstatic whorl of COLLECTIONS OF COLONIES OF BEES and the occasional guitar army of RHYS CHATHAM; alternately his solo project, "Metals", is the most harrowingly intense percussive barrage you'll ever encounter. He also finds time to collaborate with artists ranging from Wilco's Glenn Kotche to Swans' Jarboe. Whether it's minimalist bombast, free-improv interplay, or electroacoustic finesse, Mueller's got it covered. But what can he do with a guitar? In "Strung", Mueller doesn't play the guitar; he scrambles its molecules. Laying down a photon-blast of sound, he initiates a relentless, rapid-pulse attack signal that summons wave upon wave of white noise. Think inexorable alien invasion - The Day the Earth Stood Still, with Lou Reed as Klaatu and Metal Machine Music as the message. Earth doesn't stand a chance.

Mueller, Jon/Jason Kahn
Topography
PS, US Percussionist JON MUELLER continues his amazing run of releases (he appears on eight TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS titles in the first half of 2008!) with "Topography," a collaboration with Zürich-based sound and visual artist JASON KAHN. As a drummer, Mueller propels COLLECTIONS OF COLONIES OF BEES and the occasional guitar army of RHYS CHATHAM; he also finds time to collaborate with artists ranging from Wilco's Glenn Kotche to Swans' Jarboe. Kahn draws on electronic and acoustic sound sources to create slowly developing compositions imbued with a sense of timelessness. "Topography" addresses the entity of sound as both a physical and psychological factor shaping our consciousness, and is a remarkable display of electro acoustic finesse. It's a joint, limited-edition release with Mueller's own Crouton label, exquisitely packaged in a debossed, white-on-white jacket.

My Brightest Diamond
A Thousand Shark's Teeth
PS, US With this Brooklyn band's sophomore release, we're instantly reminded of Shara Worden's reputation as one of indie music's most vibrant, creative, and original voices. This record is charming, playful, daring, foreboding, graceful, eclectic, exciting, and visceral. The songs marry vast instrumentation - marimbas, harps, clarinets, French horns, rabid guitars, vibraphones, and more - to create an unequaled amalgamation of style and color. In a word, beautiful.

Nurse With Wound
Huffin' Rag Blues
PS, UK The new album, their first for over 4 years, 'Huffin' Rag Blues' is the inevitable conclusion of Steven Stapleton and Andrew Liles' passion for easy listening and lounge jazz. Contorted and carved into a distinctly Nurse With Wound sound 'Huffin' Rag Blues' is a greasy amalgam of uneasy listening, shaken and stirred Molotov cocktails and quixotica. Full to the brim with squeals, screams, smokey vocals, drunken double basses, melting vibraphones and internal organs from outer space this album is an unlikely and unique excursion from beginning to end. As with all Nurse With Wound recordings it goes without saying... expect the unexpected.

In The MIdst Of Chaos
PS, US Recorded in 1978, this is this western CT free-jazz group's only release. It would become improv jazz sax player Paul Flaherty's 1st record, who, as a youth, was smitten by the world, it's creator & Pharoah Sanders. A screamin', howlin', blisterin', slap of a record that defies categorizations as it pushes the 70's into uncharted confusion.

Last Stop: Crappy Town

Robedoor
Endlessly Blazing
PS, US Eagle Rock, CA's Robedoor are back with another doomed out K-hole. Slow creeping drones building to some nice loner caveman pound/ real song territory. Three tracks in just under 40 minutes. edition of 500 with full color jacket. Artwork by Jeremy Earl. "Another bowl of black wax lit up and littered into the smogset. Another half hour in the haze, burned and overturned. "Endlessly Blazing" loads together a trio of semi-recent resin sessions: the A is a sidelong sinkhole into lava and quaaludes, the B starts with a sprawling spiral sweetleaf ballad before convulsing into a pissed withdrawal of dread drums, electronic fumes, and damaged howling. Hold it in as long as you can" -?

Schaefer, Janek
Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict]
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews: "a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling" [The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual" [Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett, my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have been very aware of how lucky we all are. I have been constantly comparing this to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition, came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages, that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground. Discovered from the original Jodoform log book, that the lovely Polish folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother was born. The song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP''s are played at 33, 45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously, and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

Shaw, Philip
Pattii Smith - Horses (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US Description: Described as the perfect fusion of poetry and garage band rock and roll (the original concept was "rock and Rimbaud"), Horses belongs as much to the world of literary and cultural criticism as it does to the realm of musicology. While Horses pays homage to the record's origins in the nascent New York punk scene, the book's core lies in a detailed analysis of Patti Smith's lyrics and includes discussions of lyrical preoccupations: love, sex, gender, death, dreams, god, metamorphosis, intoxication, apocalypse and transcendence. Philip shaw demonstrates how Horses transformed the possibilities of both poetry and rock music; and how it achieved nothing less than a complete and systematic derangement of the senses.
Authors: Philip Shaw is a Reader in the Department of English at the University of Leicester. His previous publications include Waterloo and the Romantic Imagination (2002) and The Sublime (2006). He writes songs and plays guitar in the group Alberteen: http://www.myspace.com/alberteenmusic

Sian Alice Group
The Dusk Line
PS, US "The Dusk Line" EP is comprised of four songs recorded during work on SIAN ALICE GROUP'S debut album "59.59" in the summer of 2007. For this release they opted to work on a smaller scale, stripping their sound down to just layered grand piano and voice. Featuring contributions from just two members of the group, Rupert Clervaux and vocalist Sian Ahern, "The Dusk Line" is an exercise in restraint. It was recorded at London's The Garden, utilizing layered piano parts all performed by Clervaux. Sian Alice Group have become known for their sweeping, orchestrated aesthetic, but "The Dusk Line" distills their sound to its core.

Smay, David
Tom Waits - SwordfIshtRomboNes (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US <p>Description: Two entwined narratives run through the creation of Swordfishtrombones and form the backbone of this book. As the 1970s ended, Waits felt increasingly constrained and trapped by his persona and career. Bitter and desperately unhappy, he moved to New York in 1979 to change his life. It wasn't working. But at his low point, he got the phone call that changed everything: Francis Ford Coppola tapped Tom to write the score for One From the Heart. Waits moved back to Los Angeles to work at Zoetrope's Hollywood studio for the next 18 months. He cleaned up, disciplined himself as a songwriter and musician, collaborated closely with Coppola, and met a script analyst named Kathleen Brennan - his "only true love".
They married within 2 months at the Always and Forever Yours Wedding Chapel at 2am. Swordfishtrombones was the first thing Waits recorded after his marriage, and it was at Kathleen's urging that he made a record that conceded exactly nothing to his record label, or the critics, or his fans. There aren't many love stories where the happy ending sounds like a paint can tumbling in an empty cement mixer. Kathleen Brennan was sorely disappointed by Tom's record collection. She forced him out of his comfortable jazzbo pocket to take in foreign film scores, German theatre, and Asian percussion. These two stories of a man creating that elusive American second act, and also finding the perfect collaborator in his wife give this book a natural forward drive.
Authors: David Smay has co-edited two books on music with Kim Cooper: Lost In the Grooves: Scram's Capricious Guide To The Music You Missed, and Bubblegum Music Is The Naked Truth. He's a regular contributor to Scram, has an upcoming piece in Oxford American and has occasionally dithered about pop music on NPR, French Television and documentaries only shown at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas. But his best interview was with Ratso the punk rock puppet at Quimby's in Chicago. He lives in San Francisco with his wife and two children, Emmett and Matilda.

Speck Mountain
Blood Is Clean
PS, US Speck Mountain are back with a new single & a new energy. The warm, melancholic bath of "Hey Moon" & Summer Above has given way to a dirtier, more assertive, though equally mesmerizing sound. That's the A-side, a Honey Owens (VALET) song from last year that Speck Mountain have turned up the rock quotient on significantly, courtesy of sax, an age's old bass mantra & Marie-Claire's barbed guitar attack, transplanted direct from the most severely dosed basement on earth. On the flip, ""Backslide"" approaches the kind of wide-eyed gratification that electronica has promised in the past, but rarely delivered-with several degrees of treated organ pulsating around Karl's sweetly protracted guitar tease.

St. Pierre, Melissa
Specimens
PS, US MELISSA ST. PIERRE tosses classicism and post-classicism overboard, utilizing the prepared piano -- John Cage's notorious instrument of choice -- and electronic enhancement to sail resolutely in the direction of rock & roll. Peppering the strings, hammers, and dampers with a variety of objects, she transforms the piano's typical timbre: sparkling gamelans chatter; harrowing voodoo drums call out in the night. "Specimens", St Pierre's debut, features production and performances by COLLECTIONS OF COLONIES OF BEES; together they rival famed electric harpist ZEENA PARKINS as conservatory arsonists with a decidedly Hendrixian flair.

Tilly and The Wall
o
PS, US This is their most cohesive, sonically experimental album yet. In addition to building a tack piano for certain songs, the band toyed w/ percussion much more than their previous efforts, recording Jamie's taps through a variety of different amplifiers & floors to give each song its own distinct rhythm. W/ its massive dose of high energy, hip-shaking attitude, it's the sort of song that reminds you why you fell for them in the first place. And if you're like us, you'll quickly hit the "play" button to begin the journey that is O all over again.

Slendid Isolation
PS, SWEDEN A collection of exclusive tracks from the Radio Dept., Testbild!, Most Valuable Players, Differnet, Action Biker, Viktor Sjöberg, VED, Peter Jackson, Peter Nilsson, Redmalm, Enheten för musik och melodi, Malkovic, Erik de Vahl, Band in a Box, Flow Flux Clan, Robotboy, and Jian. Between January and December 2007 Friendly Noise released 18 mp3 singles offered as free downloads from www.friendlynoise.se. From the start it was intended to be a one-year-long project. The idea was simple: contributions chosen by us from our extended family of old friends and new discoveries, usually two songs, together with an introduction by the artists themselves and a picture to illustrate and enhance, once or twice a month. This was meant as a complement to our CD releases, and a chance to easily distribute great songs, in cases where the album context isn't necessary. These two ways of distribution aren't contradictory, they're related, as we stated on our website. Soon we realized the series had become a success, both when it came to the quality of the output and the amount of interest generated. So "Splendid Isolation" - our third compilation after "Friendly People Making Noise" (2003) and "Are You Scared To Get Happy?" (2006) - is our way of documenting the series through a selection of the songs and thus giving them a more official kind of release. The record is also a celebration of five years of Friendly Noise as a label. The order of the songs on the record isn't chronological, it's instead our attempt to make the record sound as good as possible as a whole. TRACKLIST: 1. Bognor Regis (Peter Jackson) 2. (Jack) Lullaby (Viktor Sjöberg) 3. Rondo (Most Valuable Players) 4. Stratoscope (VED) 5. Get Nowhere (Peter Nilsson) 6. Hultviksvägen 7 (Peter Jackson) 7. The Bravest Person I Know (Redmalm) 8. Action Biker
Hesperian Puisto (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 24TH)
PS, SWEDEN It really is time for Action Biker's first solo album! It has now been six years since she emerged as an artist doing fun and popular live shows and releasing CD-R's in the indie pop scene of Gothenburg, Sweden, which included people like Jens Lekman and The Honeydrips. Since then, Sarah Nyberg Pergament has been involved in other projects, such as Flow Flux Clan, Kissing Mirrors and The Dreamers, whose record "Day For Night" has received great acclaim from different places around the world. Over the years, Sarah has also performed lots of Action Biker shows (some, as an opening act for Le Tigre and The Embassy), contributed to recordings with Lars Blek (The Field), Differnet and The Honeydrips, and all this time, new recordings with Action Biker have popped up on compilations and singles. In brief, when "Hesperian Puisto" finally is released, it means the début of someone with a lot of experienceŠ The record is named after the Hesperian park in Helsinki, Finland, where Sarah lived for a while. She describes her music as baroque on synthesizers. It is pop music built on complex naivety - altogether very accessible music with distinct vocals and a crispy, sweet, analogue sound. Two great-looking videos are also included on the CD. References and Influences: Young Marble Giants, Broadcast, Dislocation Dance, Moondog, Virna Lindt, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Antena, Francoise Hardy, Saint Etienne, Brian Eno, Ghost Box, Stereolab, Fred Astaire, Maurice Ravel, ESG, Komeda, Cluster, Flying Lizards, Syd Barrett, The Passions, St Christopher, John Barry, Can, Human League, Colleen, Marine Girls, Eric Dolphy, Telex, George Delerue, The Wake, Kraftwerk, Lori & The Chameleons, Differnet.

The band has been on a tear since the album's release in fall of 2007, selling over 25,000 copies in the US in under a year. On top of that, they made their debut on the Billboard charts in the first week of release, peaked at #3 on the CMJ Top 200, and sold out several clubs nationwide on their fall 2007 tour. With the Like It or Not EP, the band finally records "One Heavy February" and "Beef in Box," which are two long-time crowd favorites from their live shows, to accompany the single version of "Like It or Not". Across the Sea of Id: The Way to Eden (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 8TH)
PS, US Quite possibly the final BSE release after an illustrious career of nearly 25 years. It marks a return to the beloved semi-acoustic style of their first few releases, and also - due to public demand! - contains no vocals. It is a mixture of new readings of past tracks & new compositions. The new material offers a singular, dreamy vision of BSE's potentially final works. The two title tracks, Across the Sea of Id and Eden Song, are reflective, yet hallucinatory explorations into Jesus Acedo's unique compositional & melodic sensibility. While Angel de la Guardia has a refined yet explosive rock swagger, it is balanced by the meditation Perelandra & La Paz. Blurt
The Factory Recordings (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 8TH)
PS, UK 12 tracks. LTM is pleased to present an archive CD of recordings made in for the legendary Factory Records label by cult band Blurt, the unclassifiable punk-jazz trio led by Ted Milton. Formed in Stroud in 1979, Blurt consisted of Ted Milton (sax, vocals), brother Jake Milton (drums) and guitarist Pete Creese. Ted had already attracted the attention of Factory founder Tony Wilson as a puppeteer (!), and were invited to join the label. Blurt performed at several Factory showcase gigs in London between April and August 1980, and recorded one side of the double compilation album A Factory Quartet (FACT 24). Although their anarchic shows and music drew rave reviews, Blurt were frustrated by delays in releasing their Factory recording, and the last minute loss of a Factory tour of Europe in October. A live album, Live In Berlin, was recorded in December 1980 and scheduled for release as a 10" on Factory Benelux, but canceled after Blurt annoyed Wilson by comparing the Factory label to lifestyle boutique Habitat. The set was subsequently released as In Berlin on Armageddon, its memorable cover featuring a photograph of a pile of pink rubbish sacks. Digitally remastered, The Factory Recordings combines all tracks from A Factory Quartet and In Berlin, including Blurt favorites My Mother Was a Friend of an Enemy of the People, Ubu, Puppeteers of the World Unite and Cherry Blossom Polish. The booklet features archive images and detailed sleevenotes. Ted Milton and Blurt still perform regularly in both Britain and Europe, and remain an undervalued national treasure.

California Oranges
Imperial Hearts (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 22ND)
PS, US Our Sacramento, CA indie-pop all stars return with a gem of a pop/rock album full of hooky choruses, call and response guitars and a super tight power-pop rhythm section. A pow-pow-powerful good good feeling! Just as you'd expect from this seasoned music family. Bask in the summer sun with the fourth album from the golden state's California Oranges and a healthy dose of the sunshine power pop they're known for. Underlying the power is a healthy dose of pop: Delicately concocted, contemplative songs exploring life's ups and downs. The quintet has hit their stride on Imperial Hearts. The record features the same line up as their 2005 release Souvenirs: John Conley (Holiday Flyer), Verna Brock (Rocketship, Beanpole, Holiday Flyer, Sinking Ships), Ross Levine (Sinking Ships), Katie Haley (Holiday Flyer, Sinking Ships), and Matt Levine (Sinking Ships). The album was jointly produced by the California Oranges and Dana Gumbiner (Night Night, Deathray). Imperial Hearts was mixed by long time friend of the band, producer/engineer, Eric Stenman (Saves the Day, The Comas, The Cab). The California Oranges construct songs filled with, "soaring boy/girl harmonies, rapid-fire licks of squeaky clean and buzz saw dirty guitar work, consistently up-tempo beats, and melodies that would make tone deaf kitten haters want to sing along" --Popmatters. "Power pop has rarely sounded as sweet." --Treblezine. TRACK LIST: 1. Brand New Spine, 2. We've Got Time, 3. Travel Writer, 4. Anywhere USA, 5. I Still Hold On, 6. Silver Shoes, 7. Feel Better, 8. Chassagnard, Jerome
(f)light (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 24TH)
PS, GERMANY With (f)light, Jérôme Chassagnard, a member of the French project Ab Ovo, presents his first solo work. He is accompanied by befriended artists like Flaque and Guillaume Eluerd (Nimp). What can we expect from an artist whose influences and preferences range from electronica and ambient to pop, ethnic music and drum'n'bass whose preferred authors are A. De St. Exupery, and André Gide, E.A. Poe and Ray Bradbury whose favorite movie directors are Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch and Steven Spielberg - just to name a few. What looks like an eclectic puzzle at first glance makes perfect sense after listening to this outstanding album... each track is carried by intense, emotional moods that take the listener from warm and soothing tranquility to disturbing and yet unknown places with proficient subtlety. Flowing ambient landscapes based upon varied rhythms include beautiful, sometimes slightly sad melodies - only a glimpse of the darkness behind the mirror of technology. All of this accented with sampled acoustic instruments and the appropriate use of voices and guitars - this album holds a perfect balance between beat and drift. A captivating piece of work - essential listening to all those who wish to enter an abstract parallel world - yet, not so abstract that they'll get lost.

Durutti Column, The
Sunlight to Blue... Blue to Blackness (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 24TH)
PS, UK "Sunlight to blue ... Blue to blackness" - This was one of the more upbeat title suggestions for the very bare, back to basics, reflective new album from The Durutti Column. Vini Reilly has recorded under the name The Durutti Column since 1978 and has a rich portfolio of work, releasing over 15 albums in this time, but Reilly has been through some dark times the past year. In a conscious response to his last two polished and studio based releases he has created some sparse, simply beautiful 'sketches' as he once called them, more reminiscent of his work from the early eighties. Many of the pieces are simply instrumentals played on his Juan Montero flamenco guitar, and he returns to 'Without Mercy' for the last track 'Grief' and reinvents 'Never Known' from LC. This release also sees the debut of a talented young pianist and singer, Poppy Morgan, who co-wrote the melancholy Ananda as a duet with what Reilly dryly calls 'intrusive guitar'. For the uninitiated, Vini was the first artist signed to Manchester's influential Factory Records, co-wrote and played on Morrissey's first solo album 'Viva Hate', and was heavily featured in the film about Manchester music culture, '24 Hour Party People'. Ever critical of Vini's voice, but ever a fierce champion of his talent, the late Tony Wilson would surely appreciate this return of The Durutti Column. Track listing: 1. Glimpse 2. Contact 3. Messages 4. So Many Crumbs And Monkeys! 5. Ged 6. Never Known Version 7. Anada 8. Head Glue 9. Demo For Gathering Dust 10. Wordless 11. Grief.

Durutti Column, The
Treatise on the Steppenwolf OST (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 8TH)
PS, UK LTM is proud to announce the release of the very first soundtrack recording by The Durutti Column, the legendary Factory Records ensemble formed and fronted by virtuoso guitarist/composer Vini Reilly. Treatise on the Steppenwolf is the soundtrack to the performance piece of the same name by experimental theatre group 12 Stars, written and directed by Gerard McInulty, first staged in Glasgow in May 2003. Freely adapted from the celebrated counter-culture novel by Hermann Hesse, the performance is a portrait a divided character in a state of ongoing conflict. Previously unreleased, the soundtrack CD combines the original studio recordings of the 12 pieces performed by The Durutti Column during the Glasgow run, as well as two bonus live tracks recorded at the event, one featuring spoken-word narrative by cast member Carolyn Allen. The attractive booklet for this 60 minute digital re-master includes background notes, and images from the Glasgow performance in May 2003. Artist biography: Manchester native Vini Reilly formed The Durutti Column in 1978, recording his debut album The Return of the Durutti Column the following year with producer Martin Hannett, a set of delicate instrumental tracks housed in an abrasive sandpaper sleeve. Subsequent landmark albums include LC (1981), Without Mercy (1984), The Guitar & Other Machines (1987), Sex & Death (1993), Fidelity (1996) and Someone Else's Party (2003). A prolific recording artist in his own right (usually with drummer Bruce Mitchell), Reilly has also guested on records by Morrissey, Olive and Holly Johnson. For many years the group sawas managed by the late Anthony H. Wilson, founder of Factory Records.

Fallen Leaves, The
It's Too Late Now (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 1ST)
PS, UK From defining Subway Sect to first & last word in garage punk Rob Symmons is back with The Fallen Leaves. London's very own group THE FALLEN LEAVES was formed in 2004 by Rob Green (Rob built himself a reputation singing at Bernie Rhodes' "Club Left" and by performing with Vic Godard's Subway Sect, notably supporting Siouxsie & The Banshees at the Music Machine in '80), and by original '76-'78 Subway Sect guitarist/founding member Rob Symmons whose distinctive discordant, stinging guitar sound was one of the defining features of the original Subway Sect which he formed with best friend Godard. Memorably Subway Sect's debut gig was at the now historic "100 Club Punk Rock Festival" in Sept '76 where they kicked off the first night, followed by their heroes the Sex Pistols, and The Clash. Subway Sect turned out to be one of the most original and innovative bands to emerge from the festival. Their first single "Nobody's Scared" was released in Mar '78, but unfortunately for Symmons by the time second single "Ambition" came out (Dec '78) Bernie Rhodes (manager of both Subway Sect and The Clash) had persuaded Vic Godard to sack the rest of band, and then somehow lost the band's original album recordings. "Ambition" went straight to the top of the indie charts selling 20,000 copies in a week and stayed there for nine weeks. Symmons' amazingly didn't play guitar again until he and long time friend Green formed The Fallen Leaves. Symmons & Green share a love of 60's garage music, and ever-so stylish vintage suits. THE FALLEN LEAVES' recordings are alive, heated and humming - preferring as they do to use vintage valve amps & mics, and recording live with no overdubs and minimal technology. They hark back to DIY punk days and concentrate on delivering impressive songs and performances.

Ginormous
At Night, Under Artificial Light (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 24TH)
PS, GERMANY On Ginormous' third album on Hymen Records, Bryan Konietzko did take more time and produced his most direct and potent musical message to date. 'At Night' is even more emotive and personal than Ginormous' previous work, all while resisting self-indulgence. These eleven tracks were objectively beaten and honed until they each became the most condensed and vivid versions of themselves. Bryan Konietzko shines his bright, 'artificial light' on the elements that hoards of electronic music composers fear the most: melody, song structure and brevity. the album is an intense and addictive experience, charging forward with the nervous energy of urban, nighttime cityscapes, speeding subways and foreboding factories. Here is an organic, human element at the center of this unrelenting journey, in the form of symphonic and acoustic instruments and warm bass lines, balancing the bold compositions. The album starts with 'punches to
