Parasol New Arrivals • May 20, 2008

Howdy all,

First off, there seems to be a run on the now rare Nines 7” (Paul’s first band) as of late and I’m wondering, “what’s the dell?” Anyway, we’d love to know if there has been recent mention of this online somewhere.

On an almost related note, I (Paul) just saw my old Velvet Crush pal, Jeffrey Underhill, yesterday as he passed through the Chicago area on his way back to Providence. A deep bond is formed when you spend thousands of hours in a van with someone. He’s a real diamond geezer.

So, what about this weeks interesting new arrivals, you may be wondering. Hows about Mason Jennings, Mudhoney, Joan Of Arc, Mates Of States, Bonnie Prince Billy, and Jay Reatard to whet your appetite.

Well, that’s all from us this week. Real quick (Roy here) we are, well, I’m ecstatic about being able to offer Levon’s “Dirt Farmer” album on the world’s favorite new format (vinyl). So keep your peepers peeled as you work your way down the list.

All the birds are a-singin’ all around me,

Paul & Roy

ps, Yo Merritt! When’s the race happening, playboy?

Akiyama, Tetuzi
The Ancient Battle to Control Death
PS, US TETUZI AKIYAMA'S contribution to the WESTERN VINYL portrait series is a departure in a career of departures. In addition to Akiyama's trademark improvised, blues-infused, guitar work, The Ancient Balance to Control Death also features intense multi-layered vocals. Much like his guitar work, the vocals flow with a sharp primal urgency. The end result is a collection of unique and tense Japanese blues that could only have come from one of Japan's most distinct and creative improvisers.

Armour, Douglas
The Light Of The Golden Day, The Arms Of The Night
PS, US And now for something different... Fulfilling the promise of his impeccable entry in our 7-inch series, "The Social Club", THE SOCIAL REGISTRY is proud to announce "The Light Of A Golden Day, The Arms Of The Night" -- the debut LP from Los Angeles located DOUGLAS ARMOUR. This album finds the artist expertly blending tons of our favorite poptones from days past to create a hyper-literate pastiche that's equal parts nostalgia and forward thinking. Echoing its title, the LP has a structure that plays off binary oppositions to create one of the most varied pop albums we've heard in a long time.

Both have been making music that has crossed paths several times in the last 19 yrs. This re-visits some of the tones & moods of their past works as well as traveling into uncharted territory all done w/ the utmost focus on heaviness & power. Of particular note is the vocal performance by Gentry Densley

Ateleia/Benjamin Curtis
Baghdad Batterie
PS, US On "Baghdad Batterie", ATELEIA and BENJAMIN CURTIS fuse splendidly, as perfectly synchronized audio alchemists, and when they dip their axes in a vat of liquid electronica, the transmutation is complete: thick, glistening beats throb and undulate, without a tell-tale twang in sight. "Baghdad Batterie" is a fabulous piece of laptop psychedelia, and certain to delight fans of Curtis and Elliott's previous collaboration, the exhilarating SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS EP, "Face to Face" on HIGH PLACES. The packaging of this vinyl-only release is similarly spectacular. It's a one-sided, 12-inch LP, PRESSED ON CLEAR VINYL; the REVERSE IS LASER ETCHED with an original illustration by acclaimed UK artist Savage Pencil, whose credits include album art for The Fall, Big Black, and Sonic Youth. It's a LIMITED-EDITION PRESSING,, so get it while you can - disks from the label's original Guitar Series in 1993/1994 are now some of Collectorville's must coveted treasures.

Bright with guitars and harmonies, Lie Down in the Light is a fresh new album from Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. His vocals are at their most expressive, a judiciously dynamic and tuneful performance. Behind and all around is a subtle backdrop of percussive slaps and shakes, touches of keys and steel, loving harmony-vocal arrangements and other sweet surprises that will send fans back to their auto-erotic dungeons, fresh toys in hand. Castanets
Tendrils
PS, US This video document, created by MIA FERM, serves as a snapshot of a particular moment in time surrounding RAPOSA and CASTANETS. It is a meditative reflection on the mesmerizing motion of water, the beauty of natural light, and the spontaneity of friends. Responding to the thickness of the songs on "In The Vines", here the songs are stripped bare and presented by new voices that further reveal the lyrical beauty of Raposa's songwriting. It is equal parts home movie (ala Jonas Mekas), Downtown 81, Pull My Daisy, and audio-visual collage.

Christian Family Underground, The
For The Depth Of Your Union
PS, US Summer of '06 Family Underground (DK) recorded with Dave Nuss of NNCK at Black Dirt Studios in the woods of upstate NY. The yield was as characteristically unhinged as one might expect: sweeping electronic sounds backed with wood and bone percussion spirit-conjure. However also harvested was some new and especially tasty crop: sung and spoken song, electric guitar/conga 'rock,' and an odd, ghostly sheen coating the entire proceeding. Nuss comments on the session: 'I remember when we were recording, momentarily leaving the studio and going out into the night and feeling it thicken like a partition separating us from this intense state of clear consciousness we had in the recording, which was like... humankind's natural state. And then thinking about Jesper from FU, an adopted Vietnamese living in DK, and how much he resembles Michael Jackson, and realizing that across continents, no man can be divided from himself. We had to make this music to provide for us some fantasy of fulfillment that would carry us through the weekend like rejuvenated suns born again climbing to heaven, after being washed in the deepest, bluest sea...' Jacket by designer Susan Cianciolo and screened inserts by Stellar, NL." Last copies.

Coalesce
012:2
PS, US COALESCE destroyed the mold of formulaic metallic-hardcore in the mid '90s. On their landmark record (& swan-song at the time), 1998's 0:12: Revolution in Just Listening, the band channeled the turbulence of their break-up into their most urgent, honest, & desperate songs to date. Fast-forward to 2008; on the eve of the second coming of COALESCE 0:12 has been repackaged & remastered for the next generation of heavy music connoisseurs. In the canon of heavy music, certainly in the world of modern hardcore, there are few records as crucial as 0:12

Collections Of Colonies Of Bees
Six Guitars
PS, US COLLECTIONS OF COLONIES OF BEES generated quite the (forgive us) buzz, following the January release of their CD "Birds", and deservedly so. Their sound is expansive, vast, and billowing; full of ringing guitars, soaring in the best traditions of the Chatham/Branca standoff; meanwhile, beneath the clouds sprawl dewy meadows of gently rolling electronica. "Six Guitars" is just what its title states, yet so much more. Wildly versatile drummer Jon Mueller follows the rules by hammering on an electric guitar with mallets, enhancing the Steve Reichian vibe (compare this with Mueller's face-melting solo onslaught Metals, also released in January). The band sparkles accordingly, lifting to a dazzling climax. It's epic minimalism in exquisite registration, and the perfect selection to introduce the TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS GUITAR SERIES (fans will be happy to hear that Mueller is on deck with a solo contribution to the series as well). Beyond the music, there's the similarly spectacular packaging. It's a LIMITED-EDITION PRESSING, so get it while you can - disks from the label's original Guitar Series in 1993/1994 are now some of Collectorville's must coveted treasures.

Dear Euphoria
S-T
PS, UK Dear Euphoria is the musical alias of Elina Johansson. Born in Dalarna, Sweden, she wrote her first proper song on her father's piano at the age of eight. ions. Musical Comparisons to; Cat Power, Kate Bush and Regina Spektor are regularly and perhaps easily made. The music of Dear Euphoria is the dark and the light, deep depths and high heights. Sometimes raw, entirely honest, absolutely real. This is Dear Euphoria.

BBC: "Dear Euphoria's self-released debut album caused more shivers than winter in her native Stockholm when it was released last year ... showcasing the Swedish Kate Bush in all her quiet majesty."

Delay, Vladislav
Anima
PS, US Originally released in 2001, incl. a previously-unreleased alternate version. This is an opus of over 60 mins., a continuous mix that reveals itself beyond audio design. He succeeds in developing his new, atypical methods of production: rather than familiar electronic traits of looping sounds, this continually develops in an organic flow, thus giving the interpretation that perhaps the music is less a digital excursion & more an instrumental development

Demian
S-T
PS, UK This lost hard-psych classic is in fact the second album by Texan psych legends Bubble Puppy, who'd changed their name for legal reasons. Recorded late at night at the celebrated Record Plant in Los Angeles, it's a stupendous blend of tough rock riffs, pop hooks, glorious melodies and biting psychedelic guitar, but was sorely under-promoted on its original release in 1971, causing the band to splinter the following year.

Desolation Wilderness
Until Forever
PS, US DESOLATION WILDERNESS is the primary musical project of Nicolaas Zwart. "Until Forever" was written, played, and recorded by Nic in Summer of 2007, at DUB NARCOTIC STUDIO in Olympia, Washington; during the late night sessions for his self- released full-length album "Hey Someone". Nic played almost all the instruments including the vibraphone, clarinet, glockenspiel, guitar, computer, and synthesizer. On "4/4 Love Song" he enlisted his friends Andrew Dorsett and Adam Oelsner to play Hammond Organ and Accordion, respectively. "Goodbye Summer Girl" is the end of a story. Saying a sudden goodbye to someone new to you who you were in love with, and seeing her disappear out of the rear view mirror of your car as you drive away; getting lost in the shimmering heat of a California summer day. "Gloria" and "4/4 Love Song" have no words, but they capture a mood you can get when watching fireworks over a lake during twilight on the Fourth of July: everything you see and do is imbued with the magic of fate and destiny.

Druids of Stonehenge, The
S-T
PS, US "The unearthly, savage, Rolling Stones/Pretty Things-inspired treatment of R&B classics as interpreted by The Druids of Stonehenge on Sundazed 10" vinyl is a phenomenon that quite simply has to be heard to be believed. When frontman David Budge cuts loose on such familiar '60s staples as 'Who Do You Love,' 'I Put A Spell On You,' 'Pretty Thing' and 'Bald Headed Woman,' it's almost as though he's being strangled by Bo Diddley's 'cobra snake necktie' with eyes popping, cartoon-like, out of his skull. The New York-based Druids cut one album after they'd moved to Los Angeles, but these six early sides, tracked at famed Nola's Penthouse studios in Manhattan, are truly the stuff of garage R&B legend!"

El Madmo
S-T
PS, US Born of social ineptitude & an ageless belief in trick-or-treatery, they offer escape, justice, karmic postulation, & that feeling you get when you know something that no one else does. Starting out as a garage band trapped in the basements of various hockey arenas, theirs is a powerfully raw sound that could only be inspired by the smell of Zamboni fuel & sweaty skates. Feat. NORAH JONES as punk rock.

Explorers Club, The
Freedom Wind
PS, US Great indie rock bands have long made a habit of recasting the music of our parents' youth. Turn on Dr. Dog, Olivia Tremor Control, or the Black Angels for just a few examples of bands who make glorious new music in classic molds. Now take the idea a step further. Take the homage just far enough that you can imagine yourself experiencing, say, THE BEACH BOYS in their prime, but with fresh songs not tempered by a generation of Sweatin' to the Oldies. This is elation without irony. This is THE EXPLORERS CLUB'S debut album, "Freedom Wind." The Beach Boys are the obvious touchstone, but dig a bit deeper and you'll hear flourishes of Paul McCartney, the Byrds, Emitt Rhodes, ELO and doo-wop. Embracing a pop blueprint from a time when great songs were played on the radio and everybody loved them all, the Explorers Club has recorded the sweetest pop record you are likely to hear this year. The Explorers Club are doing for the summer beach song what Amy Winehouse has done for R&B or Sharon Jones for funk and soul, what Antibalas have done for Afro-beat. They're reclaiming the classics as their own, injecting them with life, and making music that that transcends any era. This is how pop music is supposed to sound. Prepare yourself. "Freedom Wind" is the soundtrack to the summer of 2008.

Family Underground
Black Hole
PS, US 2007 release. "Family Underground drenched the East Coast of the USA in molten syrup last year and they toted along a tour CD-R entitled Black Hole released by the fine folk of Secret Eye. Mega bummed I didn't get to feel their magic live but I ordered that tour disc post-haste. Man, when I got it, I was slain. I thought it was their finest work to date so I had to invoke it on vinyl. I tapped into the band's communication network and together we figured this would make a killer double LP, definitely one for the record books. So The Underground sent me a half hour of unreleased musics to fill the vinyl sides to fruition. Holy Hannah, was I unprepared for A! How well the new jams mind-melded with the other tracks. And B -- the superb variation of the entire work with paramount peaks and deep arcane valleys. Get it and trip!" Limited to 500 copies on black vinyl with full color gatefold jackets.

Free Kitten
Inherit
PS, US This reacquaints us w/all caps worthy rockergirls KIM GORDON (SONIC YOUTH), JULIE CAFRITZ (PUSSY GALORE) & YOSHIMI (BOREDOMS). On the disc, they're collapsed into the present. And it is our present that is most effected by songs like "Erected Girl," which reminds one of bossa nova rhythms run through a Kosher meat grinder. And then there's "Free Kitten on the Mountain," which amounts to a travelogue of sorts--but through a Lord Buckley-like subconscious mind. IMPOSE MAGAZINE: "Holy sh!t, this is good. Are you surprised? Free Kitten is Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) and Julie Cafritz (Pussy Galore) on guitar/vocals and Yoshimi-P (Boredoms) on percussion... After eleven years since their last full-length release, Free Kitten is more of a project then a band, but their upcoming Inherit holds true to a dirty 90s indie angst that seem lost to the current cultivated landscape of indie artists making pop music. In that sense these tracks manage to be both familiar and refreshing: Free Kitten aren't reinventing what they already did 15 years ago, but they're adding beautiful music to the heap of what's good about indie rock."

Gil, Gilberto
The Sound Of Revolution 1968-69
PS, UK The Sound of Revolution combines Gilberto Gils brilliant 1968 and 69 Tropicalia albums, Frevo Rasgado and Cerebro Electronico; joyous, extraordinarily inventive pop music made against a background of terrible political unrest in Brazil and in the shadow of both imprisonment and eventually exile both for Gil and his friend Caetano Veloso. The 1968 album is electrified by the meteoric Os Mutantes and both sets arranged by Rogerio Duprat who contributes a range of totally original textures and orchestration much as George Martin did with Strawberry Fields and Sgt Pepper. Suffice to say, this combination of precocious talent achieves a magical and historically important result. Tropicalia-Os Mutantes-Rogerio Duprat-LSD-Revolution Gilberto Gil narrated recent BBC4 documentary about Tropicalia.

Goto80
Made On Internet
PS, GERMANY Considering the global distribution of computer technology for already over 30 years, the Demoscene and the related Chiptunes music have never really had a high profile. Maybe that's because of their non-commercial background, or because making obsolete digital technology the center of cultural production is mostly an insider's passion. Call it 'Geek-Art for Geeks.' In today's electronic music, the sounds of Gameboy, C64, and other discarded game hardware have gained cult status, propelled by an enthusiastic community. A key character in this permanent dedication to chiptunes is Anders Carlsson from Sweden. He has been an active member of the demoscene for almost 15 years and known under the name of GOTO80 for almost a decade. Always driven by the everlasting challenge to compose music for the best C64 demo. His knowledge of the sonic core of the C64, the legendary SID-Chip, is awesome. Just as exceptional are his musical intuition and his stylistic variety, combined with his technical skills. Made On Internet brings together 11 of his recent works showing the full scope of his production work.

Greiner, Svarte
Til Seters
PS, US Room Forever. Concept and art direction by Joshua Zucker. Photography by Kurt Mangum. A Room Forever is an art project realized as a curated series of limited edition 12" record LPs. Packaged in a custom-made box with high quality digital C-print covers and letter pressed inserts, each record features an original musical composition on one side and a field recording on the other. Pressed in one-time editions of 300, A Room Forever takes a unique and personal approach to the vinyl record LP. Conceived as a physical manifestation of the Roadside Picnic Radio podcast, the project draws upon the rich history and mythologies of audio recording to produce a final object of art that will resonate uniquely within each listener. More than anything, a room forever is inherently about the act of listening." This album by Svarte Greiner (previous releases on the Type label out of the UK, also as one-half of Deaf Center) features one side of "acoustic doom" music, the other of field recordings. Hevoset
S-T
PS, GERMANY Hevoset is the duo of two of the most enigmatic individuals of the Finnish Underground, namely Jan Anderzen and Jani Hirvonen, both hailing from Tampere. Anderzen is ringleader of a mysterious multitudinous beast known as Kemialliset Ystävät (Fonal Records), a part-time member of Avarus and Islaja and records solo as Tomutonttu (Ultra Exzema, Beta-Lactam Ring Records) with a new album coming out on Dekorder this year (hopefully). Hirvonen is best-known under his Uton monicker with two LP's on Dekorder and a stream of releases on Last Visible Dog, Digitalis, Ruralfauna, Jewelled Antler, Pseudo Arcana and his own Ikuisuus label. While most one-off meetings between so-called experimental and improvising musicians often sound like bad excuses for a few beers and endless jams this is quite the opposite - a heavy weight championship finale of two likeminded whizkids cross-fertilizing each other with idea after idea, leading to some of the weirdest and quixotic recordings you will have heard of the two. Everything you loved about Kemialliset Ystävät, Uton and Tomutonttu is contained in Hevoset.....and more. Rural psychedelia, out-of-tune plucked and strummed strings, overloaded organs and effect pedals, Jani Hirvonen's sweet wordless vocals, ecstatic improvised drone collages, bells, backward loops, jungle percussion and tons of unidentifiable sounds and noises shaped into tight 4 - 6 minute tracks. Extracts from a Foxy Digitalis review by Brad Rose: "This is the music of people removed from civilization. It's like this is some kind of ancient artifact. It grinds on your skull, but feels so right. (Š) There are moments when the things that make Kemialliset Ystävät and Uton great on their own come together in forested harmony. In particular, on side A when Anderzén is droning away on a keyboard and Uton is massaging your spinal cord with masochistic feedback scrawl - it's hypnotic. These two artists are in a trance here, channeling the sounds in their head. It's so fucking good. (Š.)This is definitely a case where the sum is greater than the parts. Anderzén and Uton are in top form here and fans of either solo project will chew this up and consume it for months."

Hooker, D.R.
The Truth
PS, US One of the rarest U.S. psych albums, previously issued on CD by Subliminal Sounds, now in a beautiful and legit 180 gram vinyl LP reissue. The Truth, recorded in Connecticut in 1972, might very well be the ultimate North American acid rock album, ever. No hype here - just incredible music. Tempting as it is to exaggerate the worth of such obscurities, The Truth deserves every plaudit that comes its way, making it astonishing that there was no real band to speak of. Instead, ten musicians are credited alongside the mysterious Donald Hooker, who wrote, sang and played lead on the album. This is one of those albums that keeps revealing new depths even when you've played it a hundred times. Connecticut hippie-philosopher concocts homemade lounge-psych masterpiece. True psychedelia! Includes a poster in a limited edition of 500 copies.

Indian Jewelry
Free Gold!
PS, US In 2006, several members of the INDIAN JEWELRY songwriting and performance team found the bitch of fame licking them on the hand. Blinded by vanity, easy fame, self love, and the internet, they went into an early retirement. "Free Gold!" is Indian Jewelry's first full-length in almost two years. It is also their most scathing with dirty hooks, shape shifting grooves, and a lot of attitude. "Free Gold!" is what people will desire. Look for them on tour this spring and summer.

Jay, Jeremy
A Place Where We Could Go
PS, US This is a debut album containing ten songs, but really it is a cinematic escapade into the mind of a singular individual, JEREMY JAY. "A Place Where We Could Go" is a statement of fiction and fact, exploring the shadowy depths of an attitude: the romance of life without the people and things that pull down the corners; create your own world. This universe may have a fairy tale look; it may be illuminated by streetlight. But it will definitely be a safe haven for the exploration of dreams. Think vast landscapes of reverberating storybook endings populated by the more charming characters from John Hughes' movies. Jeremy Jay: dancing, singing and playing guitar. Jennings, Mason
In the Ever (ON SALE)
PS, US Sixth album for Minneapolis singer-songwriter & debut on Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records. Coming off his 2006 majorlabel bow, Boneclouds, for Modest Mouse leader Isaac Brock's Epic-distributed Glacial Pace label, Jennings retreated to a studio in the woods, where he set himself up with a laptop and two microphones. The title comes from his son talking about where he came from before he was born, "Ya know dad, when I was in the Ever?' It continues his spiritual journey, informed by his love of influences like Leadbelly, Mississippi John Hurt, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash's American recordings and Led Zeppelin, his favorite band of all time. "I just wanted to make sure it's not re-enacted music," he says. "I have no use for being a retro artist. I want to understand my past and come from something." "Every time I hear a Mason Jennings album it changes the way I see the world around me," says Jack.

By combining one week of studio time, a stack of songs and a sign-up sheet allowing participants to drop in whenever they could, each track on Boo Human is as wildly different and uniquely constructed as the groups who produced them. The combination of 14 musicians whose previous collaborations include Wilco, Iron & Wine, Bonnie Prince Billy, Beth Orton, and Prefuse 73 yields a truly diverse record that is as intense as it is intimate.

July Skies
The Weather Clock
PS, UK July Skies is the musical project of Antony Harding from Birmingham UK, assisted by members of the band Epic45 (Antony worked on their 2006 album May Your Heart Be The Map) who have both previously received airplay from the late John Peel and Rob Da Bank of BBC Radio 1 and also by Verity Sharp of BBC Radio 3. Both bands are part of the truly independent UK label collective Make Mine Music, who are heading towards their 50th release in autumn 2008. The Weather Clock is July Skies 4th album and the follow up to their critically acclaimed 2004 album The English Cold. Musically, think The Durutti Column, the sensitivity of 80's indie bands like The House of Love, the guitar work of Maurice Deebank (Felt) or Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), Harold Budd, or even a modern reference to British Sea Power if they 'didn't like rock music'. The Weather Clock is inspired by a lost post-war Mid-20th century Britain and a fixation with the design and architecture of the period. The beauty in the newly built regimented housing estates and clipped front gardens... It is the sound of the empty school hall once the summer holidays had commenced....faded branch line summers where steam met diesel.....the sound of the first swallows across the fields on fresh dew drenched mornings in May.....the nothingness of weekday afternoons with the lightness of a breeze through the window and billowing curtains....hearing the distant sound of children playing in fields far from the estate... the sound of BBC broadcasts closing down and displaying the TV test card for the afternoon whilst the country continued to work, play or learn....this is all the sound of The Weather Clock. The album is released in CD digipack with 1950's period artwork by Andersen M Studio. The first 350 copies ordered from the Make Mine Music on-line shop come with a limited 7 track ep of exclusive and alternative tracks.

Justice Yeldham & The Dynamic Ribbon Device
Birthdays
PS, US Birthdays consists of two live sets by maverick amplified-glass player Justice Yeldham, recorded during his & Keg's recent tour of Europe. If you've never heard of the guy, you are in for a bloody treat. Using concert-grade piano contact mics, he amplifies a sheet of glass and plays it with his mouth and face, processing it with pedals attached to his belt, usually barefooted. The results are unworldly, and hearing it you would never imagine what created it, something an Aussie could especially achieve. Like careening assaults of insect spaceships, he transports the listener to other worlds of sound, ending most often in a crash of the glass upon his head. Mastered by the god-like Rasheed of Dubplates (Berlin), the record has been collaboratively released in an edition of 600 copies across the world.

King Darves

Left Banke, The
Walk Away Renée/Pretty Ballerina
PS, SPAIN Labeled a 'Baroque rock' band, the Left Banke's output is recommended to all fans of '60s pop, garage or beat, and has created legions of fans since its release. Full of beautiful vocal harmonies, incredible songwriting and very, very catchy melodies, this first Left Banke album was, allegedly, the most expensive record produced at that time. Created in New York by Michael Brown, son of a respected musician, the Left Banke based their sound in their vocals and some cleverly used orchestration and studio techniques, resulting in their unique sound. Now reissued with remastered sound, respecting the original artwork, and limited to only 500 copies, here's your chance to get one of the key albums from the '60s!

Leonhart, Michael
Hotel Music
PS, US "Hotel Music" is a pastiche of Serge Gainsbourg hooks, bedroom drone, California Pop (by way of Van Dyke Parks), and Downtown experiments. It is a musical portrait by MICHAEL LEONHART, session player to the stars. It was written and recorded over the course of a five-month stint (if a worldwide tour that long can be accurately labeled a stint) playing horns with Steely Dan (yes, Steely Dan). He passed his downtime on the road abusing various camera & cell phone cameras, his portable sampler, laptop and whatever instruments that happened to be within reach. The result is a more experimental trip than his sadly under-heard pop masterpiece "The Ballad of Minton Quigley" (2007, self-released). Leonhart has recorded four solo records in as many years between Steely Dan and Lenny Kravitz touring, as well as sessioning with such diverse artists as Brian Eno, David Byrne, Slash, Steven Tyler and Wynton Marsalis.

Leukers, Antonia
Hasenlove
PS, GERMANY Picture-Disc LP (limited 300). "Hasenlove" is the debut musical release of Hamburg visual artist Antonia Leukers. She's a founding member of "Institut Hasenbart", a 10-piece artist collective dedicated to a meta-scientific research of hares and related social, zoological and aesthetical phenomena in reference to the art world and pop culture. Leukers has previously created stitched, sewed and animated sculptures while casually growing cucumbers, working for a local in-vitro fertilization hospital and advising young people on erotic issues as a German Dr. Ruth for a popular Online magazine. Inspired by a journey to Island, hearing local travel guides spontaneously interweaving their narrations with sudden outbursts of folklore chanting and an encounter with Wolfgang Müller's (Die Tödliche Doris) strategy of transforming and combining his pseudo-scientific, documentary and social research into a musical and artistic performance she started to elaborate her fellow artist's lectures with musical renditions. As a passionate DIY home-recording artist she has soldered her own microphones, used cheap toy instruments, game boys and minidisk recordings of kitchen sounds to create her very own bricolage comic universe. By recycling corny AOR mainstream Rock/Pop songs into some oddly disturbing and wonderfully weird rabbit love songs with newly-made German lyrics and combining these with some truly strange original compositions (ranging from freeform collage to distorted techno to deranged singer/songwriter stuff), she has created a musical love story in 7 parts. Spiritually influenced by (though not really sounding alike) German "Neue Deutsche Welle" artists such as Der Plan and theatrical and surreal performance bands like The Residents her versions of popular love songs sound like a teenage/female Andrew Lloyd Webber on bad acid. This 1-sided vinyl-only picture-disc LP is a strictly limited edition of 300 copies. Both the gorgeous design and ornamental etching on the b-side have been done by fellow Hasenbart founding member Renate Nikolaus.

Licht, Alan & Aki Onda
Everydays
PS, US Debut collaboration of New York artists and long-time duo partners ALAN LICHT & AKI ONDA, whose combined history connects artists straddling the pop and experimental worlds, including Fennesz, Loren Connors, Takemura Nobukazu, Lee Ranaldo, and Toriko Nujiko. In the past decade their montage-inspired solo work---Licht's permutational guitar and tape pieces on Rabbi Sky and A New York Minute, Onda's field recording recontextualizations on Bon Voyage! and Ancient & Modern---has co-existed with their experimental sound/visual projects Text of Light (Licht) and Cinemage (Onda). "Everydays" is five grandly formed soundscapes that mix Onda's poetic/textural cassette sounds and the rhythmic/lyrical pull of Licht's guitar. Morphing from recognizable structures to dissonant hammered chunks and rapid cut-ups, the album perfectly weaves their signature applications of sound diaries, minimalism, grainy fidelity, looping and free blues into a dynamic and ambitious statement.

Medium Medium
Hungry, So Angry
PS, UK Medium Medium were originally signed to Cherry Red in 1981 and were one of the first signings of then A&R man Mike Alway. The band's first single, Hungry, So Angry caused quite an immediate stir at club and alternative radio level, and created quite a buzz around the band. The single was picked up by alternative radio in the U.S. and featured for several weeks in the Billboard Alternative Top 50 chart. The band recorded one album for Cherry Red, The Glitterhouse which received consistently good reviews. However, the band broke up in 1983 but were not forgotten as 'Hungry, So Angry' has been used on many compilation CDs over the years, especially in the U.S. This overdue CD re-press consists of 15 tracks and also includes the very rare promo video of 'Hungry, So Angry; as an enhanced track.

Mudhoney
The Lucky Ones
PS, US Worldwide lovers of the finer things are rejoicing at the news that Mudhoney, yep Mudhoney, is back in action in 2008 with The Lucky Ones, the band's eighth full album in a mere 20 years of triumphant rocking. Deliberately and aggressively raw, The Lucky Ones sounds as lean and as full-on as any modern equivalent one cares to mention. Recorded in a scant 3.5 days (including overdubs), Mudhoney went in armed with a batch of new material expecting to spend a fair amount of time getting it right. Bang-and bang again after some mixing-and a new album was birthed in record time, faster than anything else the band's done to date. The grand majority of these numbers were intentionally written "from the rhythm up" instead of from the riff and the lyrics down. The effect is to thrust out the bottom-end rumble of drummer Dan Peters and bassist Guy Maddison, and to bring about a cohesive whole not entirely ruled by The All Mighty Riff-although you certainly don't have to look hard to find 'em. DUSTED MAGAZINE: "The eleven tracks here are tight, raw, and marked by insistent thumping rhythms and taught chunky riffs, laying the groundwork for one of the band's most straight-ahead rock albums in years."

Superfuzz Bigmuff: Deluxe Edition
PS, US In 2008 both Sub Pop and Mudhoney are celebrating their 20th anniversary. This is the deluxe, re-mastered edition of "Superfuzz Bigmuff", containing the original EP in its correct running order, singles, demos, and two blistering live recordings from 1988, all re-mastered, or in some cases, mastered for the first time. From the liner notes: "For all the play and worldwide attention several Seattle-area bands got during the 1988-92 period, at the end of the day...there was Mudhoney - and then there was everybody else...These recordings were so life-affirming upon their release, connecting everything great about the sixties (biker movies, fuzz boxes, old guitars, three-minute songs) with the frothing, punk rock of the early 80s, that a whole new 'style' of music was born. They called it grunge, but to me it was amped-up, clear-the-room, ramalama rock...and it was about as joyous and as fun a noise as anyone'd heard in years" (Jay Hinman)

Music Go Music
Light Of Love
PS, US MUSIC GO MUSIC have the simple syrup of pop extravagance running through their veins. These arena-sized songs are composed with such savage efficiency that you find yourself humming along before two bars have gone by. They are as assured and crafted as ABBA and ELO's best songs of '76, yet Music Go Music sounds fresh. They've exploded the formulas from the inside out, sounding like a hundred others and no one else. "Light of Love" is a true celebration of pop music's potential - laying a thin sheen of magic over the world around it, and making the tedious bits of the human experience a little less so. "Light of Love" plays like the first three tracks of a future Greatest Hits album. "Speak to me, darling in hushed tones. Tell me your heart's true desire" sings Gala Bell on the title track, equal parts Debbie Harry, Karen Carpenter, and Kate Bush. Maybe it's the wonderfully layered vocals, maybe the rich synth textures, maybe their impossibly uplifting nature, but there is something immediately familiar about these songs. At first listen, we're inexorably drawn into their sphere. For at least a moment, we are surrounded by the halo of their refracted energy - we can bask in the light of love.

New Age
All Around
PS, GERMANY One of the most eye-opening LP archival issues of 2007 is now also available on CD, with bonus tracks. Also including members Mark Levinson and Bruce Langhorne. "This is what can be called one of the major sensations in the raga influenced psychedelic/acid folk field. Also some of the earliest recordings in this genre and hitherto unreleased. After the release of the Light of Day album in 1966 the now legendary Pat Kilroy and Susan Graubard went on with playing and creating music together. What you hear on this album is what they recorded for Warner Brothers in the summer of 1967, a true groundbreaking adventure of the highest order. They expanded in the direction they started in 1966 and the result is far beyond and superior to everything I heard from that time period before in this musical style except for Tim Buckley. No wonder that it didn't come out at that time because those recordings were for sure far too adventurous for Warner Brothers and also for almost other leading music companies at the time. Incredible -- and I mean INCREDIBLE raga influenced psychedelic/acid folk with some of the best songwriting I know of with monstrous lyrics and deep lead vocals. Also a wide range of instruments were played like incredible raga-esque acoustic guitar, electric bass, Spanish cowbells, bell tree, silver flute, bamboo flutes, viola, tamboura, conga drums, tables, acoustic and electric bass and tambourine. Pat Kilroy sadly died of Hodgkin's disease in December of 1967 at a very young age. If this record had a proper release at the time, it would be a major classic and a milestone today in the psychedelic history book. This CD release contains six superb never before released bonus tracks recorded at Warner Brothers Studios and KPFA-FM radio station during 1967. Be ready for an incredible musical trip along with an amazing, long and very intense story behind."

PS, US So Cal noise Nor Cal. Recorded at the end of nearly 9 months of touring, Virgin Passwords reflects a long evolution in sound and concept for Brian Miller & Kevin Shields. The Virgins that control the universe. The mafia of the cosmos. Beyond the cliched metaphor of purity and straight to literally not having sex at all. Because a Brian Miller & Kevin Shields performance proves that a noise show can be (hyper)active, crowd-engaging and knock everything to the floor without invoking angst and self-loathing. Sound Of Arrows
Danger!
PS, SWEDEN 9 song CD. Labrador is proud to present The Sound of Arrows - the band that will lead Swedish pop into the next decade. With the deepest love possible they gather sounds and samples from all over and turn them into lush pop songs with exquisitely beautiful melodies. The Sound of Arrows started as an experiment. They wanted to try making a Christmas song by sampling a Children's choir from YouTube and build a song around that. This was in the end of 2006. Due to the lack of computer, and recording, knowledge it took several months to complete it. The final version missed it's deadline, Christmas, with half a year. But the song suggested what they wanted to do musically together and marked the start of The Sound of Arrows. The Sound of Arrows is a duo consisting of Stefan Storm and Oskar Gullstrand. Stefan Storm had earlier been making house music in Panache while the other half, Oskar Gullstrand, used to play in an orchestra but is now working as a graphic designer and an animator. The members have both just passed 20 years old and are originally from a place called Gävle which by many is considered one of Sweden most boring towns. They've now moved to Stockholm and only go back to Gävle to meet family or record their songs in abandoned discotheques. Their 9-track debut EP is an embrace of the timeless and the futuristic; a travel through a new world of sights and sounds in Technicolor. The title track, "Danger!" is an epic treat. It begins with a magical verse that seems to float in space - just to explode in this spring's most memorable chorus. The theme is a pleading warning to the naïve that ends in revolt and hope. Strings, trumpets, glockenspiel and synthesizers kills the cliché "less is more" once and for all. "Danger!" is lovely pointer of where The Sound of Arrows' special aesthetics will take them, and us, in the future.

Spirit
S-T
PS, US "The mega-rare mono version of the visionary debut album by pivotal Los Angeles combo Spirit was only available for a brief moment in early 1968. Featuring eye-opening mixes, our release is an exact repro of the LP that introduced the world to Spirit classics such as 'Fresh-Garbage' and 'Mechanical World.' This unique version zeroes in on Randy California's tastefully-thundering guitar and the jazz-infused drumming of Ed Cassidy -- and is sourced from the vintage analog mono masters, completely untouched for over 35 years."

Subtle
Exiting ARM
PS, US 3rd full-length release from Bay Area sextet. Drawing from a diverse palette of instruments: sampler, synth, guitar, cello, winds, electronic and acoustic drums, and the unmistakable voice and prose of doseone, the band fashions a self-sampled and live-mic'd honest to genreless music. The adventurous pop group has collaborated with the likes of Beck, Wolf Parade, Tunde Adepbumpe of TV on the Radio, and much more. PITCHFORK: "ExitingARM is Subtle's "pop" album. And by that they mean it's their most accessible album to date, and an answer to a problem that's plagued them since they started: How do you make something dense and personal, a body of work that demands time and dedication-- and then hook a wide new audience, hang onto their ears, and make them understand it? Their new album highlights what's always been catchiest about Subtle's music: it's full of short, fast bangers that you can enjoy out of the corner of your ear. But scratch the surface, and you find something far gnarlier-- the most intricate realization yet of the vision of frontman Doseone, a.k.a. rapper, poet and visual artist Adam Drucker."

Sun Ra
The Universe Sent Me: The Lost Reel Collection Vol. 5
PS, US Imagine the suspense and anticipation one would feel when loading a 1970s Sun Ra reel onto a deck for the first time in more that 30 years & not knowing what to expect. As the tape starts, familiar sounds of the Arkestra begin to be heard from that magical time period so long ago. There is a great sense of relief and accomplishment to know music that laid dormant for far too long, and was from one of the most original creators ever, would now be preserved for all to finally hear. Volume 5 of "The Lost Reel Collection" features music from two separate tapes. The first tape is from a 1972 short recording at the Seaport Museum in New York City. The acoustics sound like an outdoor concert. The featured track is Discipline 27-ll, which is purely instrumental and may be the earliest recording of this particular version. In 1973, Ra declamations like "Life is Splendid" and "What Planet Is This?" were added on top of the music theme. The second tape is from a 1973 recording in Paris, France . Although the acoustics are quite different, it's a natural segue from the Seaport Museum tape. Opening with the Discipline 27-ll theme and the by-now more familiar declamation there which we title as "The Universe Sent Me" with this release. The beauty of the "reed" section is clearly heard during this track due to the apparent close proximity of the tape machine and the microphone setup. Once again, as with the first 4 volumes of "The Lost Reel Collection", the listener is in for a real treat.

Tamba Trio
The Miraculous Tamba Trio
PS, UK Propelled by the extraordinary piano playing and arranging skills of Luíz Eça, Tamba Trio are characterized by their very original and highly attractive blending of left field Bossa grooves and almost sacred vocal harmonies. Our program concentrates on the years between 1962-66 and finds the group at an eclectic axis of classical music, Bossa and Jazz and finding a brilliantly original vocabulary. An important landmark in the evolution of modern Brazilian music and far ahead of its time. Tamba Trio was the greatest Bossa Nova group: an institution in Brazil and now becoming better known internationally.

UTON
Straight Edge XXS
PS, GERMANY Limited 500. "Straight Edge XXS" is the 2nd vinyl album by Finland's Uton released in a strictly limited edition of 500 copies on the Dekorder label. It comes in a gorgeous full-colour collage sleeve assembled by Hirvonen himself. While Uton's last Dekorder album "Alitaju Ylimina" (and most of his other recorded works respectively) are hazy lo-fi drone masterpieces for the most part, this is a completely different affair. Recorded straight to tape within one month, right after returning from a 6-month trip to India, these songs (if you could call them songs) are completely out-of-this-world; very short and crazed sketch-like pieces sounding like a Nonesuch Explorer LP of long lost field recordings from an as yet unexplored continent. Or is it World Music from an unknown planet recorded by those Sublime Frequencies guys from mysterious short wave transmissions? Well, it is all that and more. It is pure ecstatic expression channelized through Psychedelia, Free Jazz, Noise and rural ancient Folk Music from all over the world in a completely naked, predominantly acoustic setting. One of the purest forms of music you could imagine; while all the familiar Uton elements remain evident in a hazy backcloth. Uton is the one-man project of Jani Hirvonen originally hailing from Tampere. Hirvonen is one of the most active musicians of the Finnish underground scene that has recently presented us the likes of Kuupuu, Kemialliset Ystävät, Islaja, Paavoharju and Lau Nau and a seemingly never-ending stream of beautiful and highly original record releases. Uton has previously released dozens of CD's, CD-R's and Cassettes on a myriad of labels including Jewelled Antler, Pseudo Arcana, Last Visible Dog, Digitalis, Ruralfauna and his own Ikuisuus. He has collaborated with Amon Dude (Avarus), Anla Courtis (Reynols), Antony Milton (Black Boned Angel), Ben Reynolds, Peter Wright, Phil Todd (Ashtray Navigations) and Jan Anderzen (Tomutonttu, Kemialliset Ystävät) among others. The latter collaboration (under the Hevoset moniker) is released on LP by Dekorder simultaneously.

Impala Eardrums: A Radium Sampler
PS, US For fifteen years, TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS has been the preeminent source of avant audio, championing minimal, improvised, and outsider musics of various spots and stripes. Now, as its influence radiates outward, the label presents Radium, its "rock" imprint, showcased here with "Impala Eardrums, A Radium Sampler". While minimalist legend RHYS CHATHAM leads the way with a delightful unreleased piece from his mid-80s archives, most of the other contributors are younger folks, from a new generation of performers. It's a diverse bunch, ranging from the raw Americana of MEGAFAUN and JONATHAN KANE, to the humid, pulsating krautrock of ATELEIA and the spectral songcraft of PAUL DUNCAN. NEPTUNE serves up its version of home-forged proto-clangor, while COLLECTIONS OF COLONIES OF BEES and SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS pour forth in glistening, shimmering waves. Together, these eight tracks - all previously unreleased on CD - have one thing in common: a resolute will to march headlong into the untamed brambles and briar patches of 21st-century sound.

Psychedelic Minds Vol. 1 (Heavy Underground 1967-71)
PS, GERMANY The international bands on this selection represent impressively the boiling point of the short living worldwide psychedelic rock movement between 1967-71 -- the years when garage punk evolved into heavy psychedelic rock with its wider soundscapes and complex improvisations. Volume 1 contains a dozen 45-rpm songs by lost psychedelic messengers (eight US bands and from Germany, Peru, France each one). The groups included are: Blackrock, Sound Machine, Yesterday's Obsession, Mastermind, Sangre Mexicana, Bhagavad Gita, Protein Bros, Purple Canteen, Los Nuevos Shains, Blow Mind and the A & B-side of legendary Dirty Filthy Mud. About half of the songs are previously unreissued and appear in stunning sound quality and 12p. poster-booklet. Certainly a piece of wax for Dr. Leary's students: 'Turn on, Tune in, Listen again!' To be continued...

Nervous Circuits (CD/DVD)
PS, US mastered and the DVD is loaded with select footage from the band's history along with three additional full live sets. "While there's nothing all that unique anymore about an indie rock band mixing in a little electronics, there was something breathtakingly original about The VSS - essentially a hardcore punk band - incorporating these elements. The result was something organic and angry and intensely human, but it was laced with a sharp, robotic edge" - Epitonic.com.

Wedding Present, The
El Rey
PS, US El Rey - the first new album in over three years from The Wedding Present - was recorded in early 2008 in Chicago by Steve Albini. The band returned from an eight-year hiatus in early 2005 with the release of Take Fountain. This long-awaited album brought them back into the spotlight with all the style and sophistication associated with a legendary group, but fans were also pleased to see the band had lost none of the growling angst with which they had burst onto the scene with their 1985 debut, George Best. That intensity has been turned up even further for the new album, El Rey, The Wedding Present's first collaboration with the legendary Albini since the renowned Seamonsters in 1991. Written while David Gedge was living in Los Angeles, El Rey burns with West Coast sunlight; Hollywood seen through the eyes of a gritty Northerner. Speaking about El Rey in Mojo magazine recently, Gedge said: "I've been living in West Hollywood for the last year or so, and while I'm not going to claim that this is my 'L.A.' album, there are some references. I suppose the themes are lust, jealousy, betrayal, regret, and obsession, super-heros the usual. We chose to record with Steve this time because the new songs were sounding very guitary and quite dark. It's been good.
As you'd imagine, really; Albini knows his stuff". The Wedding Present will be touring North America in Fall 2008 with the line-up of: David Gedge (guitar & vocals), Terry de Castro (bass), Graeme Ramsay (drums), and Chris McConville (guitar).

Windsor For The Derby
How We Lost
PS, US Despite the connotation of its title, "How We Lost" is a celebratory album. It's a reflective record and, in its own way, celebrates the WINDSOR FOR THE DERBY continuum that's been created from their first release ("Calm Hades Float", 1996) to their last ("Giving Up the Ghost", 2005). Each of these recordings is a sequel to the next both in narrative and musically and as the band's first two records ("Calm Hades Float" and "Minnie Greutzfeldt") were re-released last year they found themselves in constant dialogue about their body of work and the paths they'd chosen. Also a part of that ongoing dialogue were the records that the band finds itself consistently re-visiting (Swell Maps, Section 25, Psychic TV and much of the Factory Records catalog) and what makes those recordings timeless and resonate in a personal way with the band. The songs on "How We Lost" are reflections of those records and those conversations. It's about the band and the ways the band has changed over the years, the things they hold onto and what's been left behind.

Action Biker
Hesperian Puisto (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 24TH)
PS, SWEDEN It really is time for Action Biker's first solo album! It has now been six years since she emerged as an artist doing fun and popular live shows and releasing CD-R's in the indie pop scene of Gothenburg, Sweden, which included people like Jens Lekman and The Honeydrips. Since then, Sarah Nyberg Pergament has been involved in other projects, such as Flow Flux Clan, Kissing Mirrors and The Dreamers, whose record "Day For Night" has received great acclaim from different places around the world. Over the years, Sarah has also performed lots of Action Biker shows (some, as an opening act for Le Tigre and The Embassy), contributed to recordings with Lars Blek (The Field), Differnet and The Honeydrips, and all this time, new recordings with Action Biker have popped up on compilations and singles. In brief, when "Hesperian Puisto" finally is released, it means the début of someone with a lot of experienceŠ The record is named after the Hesperian park in Helsinki, Finland, where Sarah lived for a while. She describes her music as baroque on synthesizers. It is pop music built on complex naivety - altogether very accessible music with distinct vocals and a crispy, sweet, analogue sound. Two great-looking videos are also included on the CD. References and Influences: Young Marble Giants, Broadcast, Dislocation Dance, Moondog, Virna Lindt, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Antena, Francoise Hardy, Saint Etienne, Brian Eno, Ghost Box, Stereolab, Fred Astaire, Maurice Ravel, ESG, Komeda, Cluster, Flying Lizards, Syd Barrett, The Passions, St Christopher, John Barry, Can, Human League, Colleen, Marine Girls, Eric Dolphy, Telex, George Delerue, The Wake, Kraftwerk, Lori & The Chameleons, Differnet.

The band has been on a tear since the album's release in fall of 2007, selling over 25,000 copies in the US in under a year. On top of that, they made their debut on the Billboard charts in the first week of release, peaked at #3 on the CMJ Top 200, and sold out several clubs nationwide on their fall 2007 tour. With the Like It or Not EP, the band finally records "One Heavy February" and "Beef in Box," which are two long-time crowd favorites from their live shows, to accompany the single version of "Like It or Not". To top it off there is a "Like It or Not" remix by one of 2008 biggest buzz bands, El Guincho.

ASS (Andreas Soderstrom Solo)
My Get Up And Go Just Got Up And Went (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 27TH)
PS, UK Very limited! Peering out between the mass of strings, hanging like vines, there must have been a spark of childish curiosity. From the giddy playfulness of youth all the way to the folk hinterland, Andreas Soderstrom has been surrounded by instruments, exposed to the sounds of his father's bazouki factory - an extraordinary mélange of clattering noise and metallic melody. That natural inquisitiveness has obviously paid off, and it surely can't be a coincidence that a career in music beckoned. Trading under the pseudonym Ass - it stands for Andreas Soderstrom Solo - for more than a decade he has been the hitherto unknown man of Swedish pop, having played with the likes of electro-pop priestess Jenny Wilson, digital folk stalwarts Tape, offbeat folk-pop minstrel Blood Music, and Taken By Trees, the latest incarnation of former Concretes singer Victoria Bergsman. All that will change with the release of 'My Get Up and Go Just Got Up and Went', the second full-length album from Soderstrom under his Ass moniker. Soderstrom plays all of the instruments found on this quietly intoxicating 10-track record, the follow-up to his astonishingly assured, eponymous debut - both released on Headspin Recordings. It finds him hacking through the folk undergrowth, his fluid dynamic underpinning a stark melancholy that simmers throughout. It's a real treat, and a chance to hear the whispered charm of a subtly disarming performer. To paraphrase George Clinton - free your mind, and Ass will follow...Very Limited vinyl Edition of 500 copies in thick cardboard stock, lyric insert and on purple wax.
