Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Sigur Ros "Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust" CD $9.25 (XL)
Like the Notwist last week Sigur Ros have traveled a few light years closer to the terrestrial, with a dash of humanity leavening the otherworldliness, 'sunny' is the operative word here, outside a couple epic, glacial ballads. Their elemental folk still inhabits its own special cosmos, indeed, like the ghost of Nick Drake scoring the northern lights, like a frosty Radiohead, but wild and woolier this time, like fellow Scandinavians Laakso. And Animal Collective? Maybe "Gobbledigook", a little bit?

Thrillsville: Parasol staff's weekly picks

Jim picks: Fleet Foxes - Self-Titled CD I can't believe I didn't like the EP! Might have to reconnoiter, reconsider... All the echos, harmonies, the bits like Pet Sounds revisited, the bits like Bjorn Olsson's instrumental alchemy; it's inebriating, or I'm inebriated, or both.

Roy picks: Sigur Ros Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust CD Epic and therapeutic all at the same time. I’m having a hard time hearing the Animal Collective comparison that all the message board kids are spouting, but hey, whatever gets you through the night.

Geoff picks: The Key - Fit Me In CD

Angie picks: Notwist - The Devil, You + Me CD I can't stop listening!

Verbs
PS, US Sophomore record from acclaimed Portland experimental pop collective, which, in its swirling depths and subtleties, promises to be one of this year's most satisfying surprises. Verbs is padded out with contributions from nearly thirty collaborators, a list which includes members of YELLOW SWANS, PARENTHETICAL GIRLS, and EVOLUTIONARY JASS BAND, among many others-inadvertently resulting in a strange & singular snapshot of the city's. famously sprawling musical community. The resulting record seamlessly segues through new & unlikely ecstatic extremes with an arresting economy.

Aufgehoben
Khora
PS, US The album begins w/ 3 short pieces, sonic examples of texture meeting metal-like a djinn trapped in molten gold, attempting to burst free from his cage but only managing to express rage via infinie temporary sculptures ranging from the nightmares of the Mutter Museum to futuristic expressions of nature not yet captured by a conscious eye. The final track is 28 mins of pure glory that will surely become one of noise rock's classics.

S-T
PS, US Originally released in 2005 as a limited edition CD-R on YELLOW SWANS' JYRK label, this 3-way collab now gets a proper run on wax. Despite the weight of these players when they rock alone, this jam really never gets into full on white out territory. Instead, it's loaded to the brim w/ wavy neon distortion & soothing low end that occasional drops out into huge washes of emptiness. RED vinyl w/ LIME GREEN splatter. LIMITED TO 500

Barn Owl
Raft of Serpents
PS, US This one doesn't wedge so deep into psych song territory..instead it seems to be a series of somnambulant haunts on the classic American 6-string/open tuning form that are heavily f/x smeared into gossamer tones that kinda seem to hover overhead. One thing the BARN OWL dudes do well is take their time, so don't expect anything on this disc to move any faster than thoughts floating out of a brain on Codeine. LIMITED TO 100

Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood
Preying In Circles
PS, US Taken from various recordings over a period from 05/06, the core duo of brother & sister Michael & Kristina Donnelly are joined by EON in a killer trio setting. Not as psych-acid as some of their recent output. Not to say the group doesn't kick up a good racket, it's just way spacious & soft sounding at points. Lots of dreamy moments of quiet acoustic strum & subtle synth weirdness. & of course, LOADS of percussive implosions...but not at all heavy handed. LIMITED TO 500

Camper Van Beethoven
Popular Songs of Great Enduring Strength and Beauty
PS, US Mid- to late-period restrospective compiles some of Camper Van Beethoven's finest, most enduring, strongest and most potent phonological loops. Forewarned is forearmed! "Popular Songs" features 18 tracks, 5 of which have been re-recorded specifically for this release. Explains Camper Van Beethoven band spokesperson, Col. Jack "Cheese" Sandwich (ret.) of Limone sul Garda, Italy : "We endeavored to present an enticing set of popular songs from the much-acclaimed "secondary and tertiary recording periods" of the band, 1985-1990. We were, however, thwarted in this effort by a certain recording company which had released the later (tertiary) output of these original recordings. We made offers to buy back our own catalog, but they were rebuffed. Hence, still owning the publishing rights, we decided to re-record a few of these later songs. We have attempted to remake them to so closely resemble the original recordings as to be essentially exact forgeries, but keen ears may be able to sense an underlying maturity that the originals might have lacked. We apologize for that, but it couldn't be helped."

Chassagnard, Jerome
(f)light
PS, GERMANY With (f)light, Jérôme Chassagnard, a member of the French project Ab Ovo, presents his first solo work. He is accompanied by befriended artists like Flaque and Guillaume Eluerd (Nimp). What can we expect from an artist whose influences and preferences range from electronica and ambient to pop, ethnic music and drum'n'bass whose preferred authors are A. De St. Exupery, and André Gide, E.A. Poe and Ray Bradbury whose favorite movie directors are Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch and Steven Spielberg - just to name a few. What looks like an eclectic puzzle at first glance makes perfect sense after listening to this outstanding album... each track is carried by intense, emotional moods that take the listener from warm and soothing tranquility to disturbing and yet unknown places with proficient subtlety. Flowing ambient landscapes based upon varied rhythms include beautiful, sometimes slightly sad melodies - only a glimpse of the darkness behind the mirror of technology. All of this accented with sampled acoustic instruments and the appropriate use of voices and guitars - this album holds a perfect balance between beat and drift. A captivating piece of work - essential listening to all those who wish to enter an abstract parallel world - yet, not so abstract that they'll get lost.

Davis, John
Gold Hooped Nature
PS, US A scenic set of audio drift that easily zigzags dense passages of analog crunch as well as blank vistas of crystalline tones via guitars, found sounds, contact microphones, tape speed oscillations, field recordings & a small battery of effects. John's study as a Filmmaker & Photographer definitely plays some role here, w/ any number of landscapes (real or imagined, inner or outer) being brought to mind. Way less head than heart though, w/plenty of these tracks dipped in a romantic glaze that betrays any tendency to over conceptualize drone/ambient/whatever music. LIMITED TO 300

Durutti Column, The
Sunlight to Blue... Blue to Blackness
PS, UK "Sunlight to blue ... Blue to blackness" - This was one of the more upbeat title suggestions for the very bare, back to basics, reflective new album from The Durutti Column. Vini Reilly has recorded under the name The Durutti Column since 1978 and has a rich portfolio of work, releasing over 15 albums in this time, but Reilly has been through some dark times the past year. In a conscious response to his last two polished and studio based releases he has created some sparse, simply beautiful 'sketches' as he once called them, more reminiscent of his work from the early eighties. Many of the pieces are simply instrumentals played on his Juan Montero flamenco guitar, and he returns to 'Without Mercy' for the last track 'Grief' and reinvents 'Never Known' from LC. This release also sees the debut of a talented young pianist and singer, Poppy Morgan, who co-wrote the melancholy Ananda as a duet with what Reilly dryly calls 'intrusive guitar'. For the uninitiated, Vini was the first artist signed to Manchester's influential Factory Records, co-wrote and played on Morrissey's first solo album 'Viva Hate', and was heavily featured in the film about Manchester music culture, '24 Hour Party People'. Ever critical of Vini's voice, but ever a fierce champion of his talent, the late Tony Wilson would surely appreciate this return of The Durutti Column. Track listing: 1. Glimpse 2. Contact 3. Messages 4. So Many Crumbs And Monkeys! 5. Ged 6. Never Known Version 7. Anada 8. Head Glue 9. Demo For Gathering Dust 10. Wordless 11. Grief.

warm, white sand beaches.

Ginormous
At Night, Under Artificial Light
PS, GERMANY On Ginormous' third album on Hymen Records, Bryan Konietzko did take more time and produced his most direct and potent musical message to date. 'At Night' is even more emotive and personal than Ginormous' previous work, all while resisting self-indulgence. These eleven tracks were objectively beaten and honed until they each became the most condensed and vivid versions of themselves. Bryan Konietzko shines his bright, 'artificial light' on the elements that hoards of electronic music composers fear the most: melody, song structure and brevity. the album is an intense and addictive experience, charging forward with the nervous energy of urban, nighttime cityscapes, speeding subways and foreboding factories. Here is an organic, human element at the center of this unrelenting journey, in the form of symphonic and acoustic instruments and warm bass lines, balancing the bold compositions. The album starts with 'punches to carefully coax,' a proud peacock of a track where thick, jagged planes of ice collide with razor sharp synth strings. 'Melted Circadian' bristles with a chromatically-fractal melody that spins like a neon helix in vertigo. Konietzko parades a passionate assortment of prepared guitars with a muscular beat in the sweeping 'coiled so tightly.' The title track confidently trudges like a phalanx of tungsten-clad shadows pursuing a cloud of glittering insects. 'From Deep Bore Holes' hypnotizes with an unsettlingly lingual snare drum that tries and fails to speak, possibly warning of the molten, rubberized synth melody that waits in the depths, poised to scald. Finally, 'awakening the magpie in all of us' sails on a slow Bonham-esque dream-beat while dozens of chimes and metallophones pull the 43-minute album to its inevitable, timely conclusion.

Ives, Charles
A Radical In A Suit And Tie
PS, UK The music of Charles Ives is a cultural sourcebook of America at the beginning of the twentieth century. He took the evangelical hymns, the college songs, melodies of the dance hall, the tunes of small town bands and the sounds of village life and shaped them into musical works that are at one familiar and of startling originality. Long considered to be unplayable, his musical juxtapositions would prove to be enormously influential inform such kaleidoscopic inventions as Van Dyke Parks' Song Cycle and the Beach Boys' Smile.

Key, The
Fit Me In
PS, UK German Volker Langefeld and Englishman Alan Warren were the brains behind The Key, whose 1978 album "Fit Me In" is a largely undiscovered jewel in the '70s power-pop crown. Whilst similarly conceived long players by the likes of Klaatu and Liverpool Echo - who also wore their Paul McCartney/Emitt Rhodes/Eric Carmen influences on their sleeves - have become acknowledged classics, The Key's debut has remained a mystery to all but the lucky few; until now! Recorded in Germany and England, released on EMI's short-lived Emily subsidiary, the album sold well and the duo recruited a touring band embarking on a whirlwind of promotional activity, appearing on TV and radio shows everywhere. A third member, Michael Lowey, joined the group in time to record a follow-up single and a couple of unreleased tracks (all included here) but the band were dropped by EMI as quickly as they'd been picked up. First reissue anywhere ever of this much missed album!

Lithops
Mound Magnet: Part Two
PS, US "Elevations above Sea Level" is the second Mound Magnet part from Lithops aka Jan St Werner, 1/2 of the prolific duo Mouse on Mars, 1/3 of last year's surprise collaboration "Von Südenfed" with the Fall's Mark E Smith & 1/2 of the dsp group Microstoria. "Elevations above Sea Level" gives us aural diagrams of a large, hypermodern cities with futuristic vehicles moving around. The electrical ticking of fluorescent advertising panels, a thwappy airiness of the entilation system, the rattles of trains & chopped up hums of distant roads, the mechanical groans that maintenance machinery starts up with, rain drumming on
the stretched glass roofs of urban malls, the howling groans of motorcycles on city highways. It's not an ambient record by any means, nor is it purely musique concrete. It's rather an acid fulled hallucination of how to detect an idea of the future in the noises that surround us.

Little Ax
Stone Cold Ohio
PS, US AMG: "
Little Axe is guitarist and singer Skip McDonald, but it's also much more than that. It is, in practice, a virtual reunion of the Sugarhill Gang -- the rhythm section responsible for the grooves underlying such paleo-hip-hop classics as "Rapper's Delight" and "White Lines" -- and therefore also a virtual reunion of Tackhead, the pioneering avant funk outfit that brought the Sugarhill Gang together with British producer Adrian Sherwood and vocalists Gary Clail and Bernard Fowler. In the Little Axe context, though, the focus is squarely on McDonald and on his overriding passion: vintage blues. Imagine a Delta blues aesthetic (spare, rural, and stark), and then imagine it thickened with additional instrumental layers and twisted with dubwise atmospherics, and you'll have some idea what to expect -- sort of like a posthumous collaboration between Howlin' Wolf and African Head Charge."

Nina Rota
War And Peace: OST
PS, UK For King Vidor's 1956 filming of Tolstoy's epic, Nino Rota, already revered for his work on the films of Federico Fellini and who would go on to compose the Oscar-winning music for the first two parts of The Godfather trilogy, provides a suitably dramatic and romantic score that pays homage to the music of Tchaikovsky. The film is a truly sumptuous spectacle, thanks to the radiance of the young Audrey Hepburn (who plays Natasha) and the contribution of veteran cinematographer Jack Cardiff - widely hailed as a genius in the field after his work on the Powell and Pressburger masterpieces A Matter of Life and Death, Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes. Nino Rota s score is long deleted in digital form and much sought after by the composer s acolytes in America, Japan and Italy especially. Audrey Hepburn is collectable in all mediums and naturally enough she graces the front cover of our edition. Prelude / The Orgy / Andrei Leaving For The War - Pierre And Natasha / The Battle Of Austerlitz / Moment Musical - Andrei Andnatasha - The Hunt / War And Peace (Natasha's Waltz) / Anatole And Natasha / Winter And The Remembrance Of Andrei / The Charge Of The Cavalry And The Wounded / Exodus From Moscow / Napoleon's Retreat / The Homecoming At Moscow.

Nurse With Wound
Huffin' Rag Blues
PS, UK The new album, their first for over 4 years, 'Huffin' Rag Blues' is the inevitable conclusion of Steven Stapleton and Andrew Liles' passion for easy listening and lounge jazz. Contorted and carved into a distinctly Nurse With Wound sound 'Huffin' Rag Blues' is a greasy amalgam of uneasy listening, shaken and stirred Molotov cocktails and quixotica. Full to the brim with squeals, screams, smokey vocals, drunken double basses, melting vibraphones and internal organs from outer space this album is an unlikely and unique excursion from beginning to end. As with all Nurse With Wound recordings it goes without saying... expect the unexpected.

Pumice
Quo
PS, US As the title self-effacingly implies, Quo proffers a triumphant, primo slice of past Pumiceisms: uncertain progressions,
anomalous structure, inimitable guitar buzz, sublime melancholy & distorted vocals (crooned, spoken & moaned). Quo once more finds Pumice cruising the convergence of pop, folk & noise strains with bona fide inner mystique. Sputtering sub-underground skiffle aims for outer zones, diamond cuts of nervous guitar with pesky hooks that sting & tickle tread rough hewn punk turf, pop tangents charm with echoes of the Kilgours or Chris Knox, and woozy synth blurts & drones thread the patchwork patterns with Hulk-like grace.

The band released it's first collection of music, the 1998 landmark, Oh Yeah, That's Right!, on Chicago's No Record Company label. Schaefer, Janek
Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict]
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews: "a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling" [The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual" [Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett, my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have been very aware of how lucky we all are. I have been constantly comparing this to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition, came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages, that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground. Discovered from the original Jodoform log book, that the lovely Polish folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother was born. The song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP''s are played at 33, 45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously, and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

Sigur Ros
Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust
PS, US Inspired by the unfettered feeling of the acoustic performances filmed during Heima, Sigur Rós adopted a looser approach in creating their fifth album Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust. The album consequently is fresher and more human than anything they've previously recorded. Rough edges, cracked notes, and the sound of fingers on strings are audible resulting in tracks (e.g. "Íllgresi") that prove to be the band's sparsest and most affecting work to date. Worry not though, plenty of electric guitar can be heard throughout the album ensuring Sigur Rós' commitment to challenging sonic limitations. Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust is truly a groundbreaking album for Sigur Rós. It's the first time they've attempted to write, record, mix, release and support (by touring) an album in the same year. Notoriously known for their laborious writing/recording style and their Icelandic
roots, Sigur Rós decided to record an album outside of Iceland for the first time. Recording, mixing and mastering sessions took place in such un-Reykjavik cities as New York (Sear Sound and Sterling Sound), London (Abbey Road and Assault & Battery) and Havana. The result is pretty much their "leave home" album, the anti-Heima. The opening track, "Gobbledigook", is a manifesto setter with its shifting/no time signature. On the last track, "All Alright", Sigur Rós find themselves singing a song solely in English for the first time. The seventh track, "Ára Bátur", was performed with a full orchestra and the London Oratory Boys Choir. This was recorded in one take with no overdubs and the result was 90 people playing at once and just one perfect take. This is their first album working with Flood (U2, Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey) and the first since their debut to not be recorded with Ken Thomas. It was a true co-production, one that found Sigur Rós breaking out of old molds/habits. The cover artwork is a photo taken from a flyer for Ryan McGinley's most recent photo exhibition in NYC, "I Know Where the Summer Goes", and the image captures perfectly the spirit of the album, one of free-spirited happiness and exploration.

Smith, Steven R.
Anchorite
PS, US Reissue of the dazzling jewel, originally released in 2006 on Important Records as a limited run LP in their ongoing Arts & Crafts Series. Performed live to 2 track w/the aide of tape loops & prerecorded takes, the music maintains a drifting, painterly quality that easily evokes the American west as much as the European east which Smith so lovingly mines for his HALA STRANA recordings. Sepia toned & tinged w/ a luminous distortion, The Anchorite, as the name suggests, is reserved, pulled back & solemn, some kind of hermetic prayer for the end of the world. LIMITED TO 500.

PS, US A gritty, disgruntled ball of stoner rock frustration from a group of hardcore guys w/ heavy hearts embracing their late 70's groove rock influences to the fullest. PS, UK Import version, for those who cannot wait...like Jim. The Black Swan has always been the album that divided Triffids fans - it was an eclectic mix of styles at the time and, though this seems a little less unusual these days, it's still mighty eclectic. Restored to the album Dave and the band had hoped against hope for in 1989 by the addition of 5 songs left out back then - and an encore. Accompanied by a bonus disc of demos and unreleased material. Treeless Plain [expanded re-issue, import]
PS, UK Import version, for those who cannot wait...like Jim. Treeless Plain was recorded in a dozen midnight to dawn sessions with a talented but green engineer, Nick Mainsbridge some 25 years ago. Legend has it that the time left to mix all tracks was 2 hours. Fortunately the 24 track masters were retained and we were able to commission a brand new mix from the now considerably less green Mr Mainsbridge. Wow springs to mind. The original album (plus extra tracks from the same sessions) remixed by the original engineer Mainsbridge, remastered and further expanded with live tracks.

Tubes, The
Goin Down The Tubes
PS, UK Reissue of this classic compilation, taken from the Tubes' golden period during their time with A&M records in the late 1970's. This double CD takes from all their best-loved albums and includes the entire remote control album that was released in 1979, produced by Todd Rundgren. The CD booklet features a UK discography, sleeve notes and lyrics to the singles included on the album. Also many of the band's brilliant and visually striking album images are featured throughout the booklet. The CD features 5 of the band's best known singles 'White Punks On Dope', 'Don't Touch Me There', 'Prime Time', 'TV is King' and 'Love's A Mystery (I Don't Understand)'. The Tubes created a unique blend of tongue in cheek theatrical rock that found a niche within the whole punk/new wave movement of the mid-late 70's. They built a huge reputation for their outrageously extravagant live shows, performing at Knebworth festival and a record breaking run at the old Hammersmith Odeon. The Tubes are still working today.

Action Biker
Hesperian Puisto (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 12TH)
PS, SWEDEN It really is time for Action Biker's first solo album! It has now been six years since she emerged as an artist doing fun and popular live shows and releasing CD-R's in the indie pop scene of Gothenburg, Sweden, which included people like Jens Lekman and The Honeydrips. Since then, Sarah Nyberg Pergament has been involved in other projects, such as Flow Flux Clan, Kissing Mirrors and The Dreamers, whose record "Day For Night" has received great acclaim from different places around the world. Over the years, Sarah has also performed lots of Action Biker shows (some, as an opening act for Le Tigre and The Embassy), contributed to recordings with Lars Blek (The Field), Differnet and The Honeydrips, and all this time, new recordings with Action Biker have popped up on compilations and singles. In brief, when "Hesperian Puisto" finally is released, it means the début of someone with a lot of experienceŠ The record is named after the Hesperian park in Helsinki, Finland, where Sarah lived for a while. She describes her music as baroque on synthesizers. It is pop music built on complex naivety - altogether very accessible music with distinct vocals and a crispy, sweet, analogue sound. Two great-looking videos are also included on the CD. References and Influences: Young Marble Giants, Broadcast, Dislocation Dance, Moondog, Virna Lindt, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Antena, Francoise Hardy, Saint Etienne, Brian Eno, Ghost Box, Stereolab, Fred Astaire, Maurice Ravel, ESG, Komeda, Cluster, Flying Lizards, Syd Barrett, The Passions, St Christopher, John Barry, Can, Human League, Colleen, Marine Girls, Eric Dolphy, Telex, George Delerue, The Wake, Kraftwerk, Lori & The Chameleons, Differnet.

On top of that, they made their debut on the Billboard charts in the first week of release, peaked at #3 on the CMJ Top 200, and sold out several clubs nationwide on their fall 2007 tour. With the Like It or Not EP, the band finally records "One Heavy February" and "Beef in Box," which are two long-time crowd favorites from their live shows, to accompany the single version of "Like It or Not". Across the Sea of Id: The Way to Eden (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 8TH)
PS, US Quite possibly the final BSE release after an illustrious career of nearly 25 years. It marks a return to the beloved semi-acoustic style of their first few releases, and also - due to public demand! - contains no vocals. It is a mixture of new readings of past tracks & new compositions. The new material offers a singular, dreamy vision of BSE's potentially final works. The two title tracks, Across the Sea of Id and Eden Song, are reflective, yet hallucinatory explorations into Jesus Acedo's unique compositional & melodic sensibility. While Angel de la Guardia has a refined yet explosive rock swagger, it is balanced by the meditation Perelandra & La Paz. Blurt
The Factory Recordings (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 8TH)
PS, UK 12 tracks. LTM is pleased to present an archive CD of recordings made in for the legendary Factory Records label by cult band Blurt, the unclassifiable punk-jazz trio led by Ted Milton. Formed in Stroud in 1979, Blurt consisted of Ted Milton (sax, vocals), brother Jake Milton (drums) and guitarist Pete Creese. Ted had already attracted the attention of Factory founder Tony Wilson as a puppeteer (!), and were invited to join the label. Blurt performed at several Factory showcase gigs in London between April and August 1980, and recorded one side of the double compilation album A Factory Quartet (FACT 24). Although their anarchic shows and music drew rave reviews, Blurt were frustrated by delays in releasing their Factory recording, and the last minute loss of a Factory tour of Europe in October. A live album, Live In Berlin, was recorded in December 1980 and scheduled for release as a 10" on Factory Benelux, but canceled after Blurt annoyed Wilson by comparing the Factory label to lifestyle boutique Habitat. The set was subsequently released as In Berlin on Armageddon, its memorable cover featuring a photograph of a pile of pink rubbish sacks. Digitally remastered, The Factory Recordings combines all tracks from A Factory Quartet and In Berlin, including Blurt favorites My Mother Was a Friend of an Enemy of the People, Ubu, Puppeteers of the World Unite and Cherry Blossom Polish. The booklet features archive images and detailed sleevenotes. Ted Milton and Blurt still perform regularly in both Britain and Europe, and remain an undervalued national treasure.

Brown Bird
Bottom of the Sea (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 1ST)
PS, US Dark Americana trio have brought subtly disturbing lyrics dressed in soothing harmonies to those who will listen since 2003. Their sound ranges from simple sea-shanty style folk to complex counterpoints with an Eastern European flavor. Their influences of indie, classical, and old american hymns rise and fall within their songs like whitecaps on a dark and stormy sea. For fans of John Prine, Dirty Three, and Low.

California Oranges
Imperial Hearts (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 22ND)
PS, US Our Sacramento, CA indie-pop all stars return with a gem of a pop/rock album full of hooky choruses, call and response guitars and a super tight power-pop rhythm section. A pow-pow-powerful good good feeling! Just as you'd expect from this seasoned music family. Bask in the summer sun with the fourth album from the golden state's California Oranges and a healthy dose of the sunshine power pop they're known for. Underlying the power is a healthy dose of pop: Delicately concocted, contemplative songs exploring life's ups and downs. The quintet has hit their stride on Imperial Hearts. The record features the same line up as their 2005 release Souvenirs: John Conley (Holiday Flyer), Verna Brock (Rocketship, Beanpole, Holiday Flyer, Sinking Ships), Ross Levine (Sinking Ships), Katie Haley (Holiday Flyer, Sinking Ships), and Matt Levine (Sinking Ships). The album was jointly produced by the California Oranges and Dana Gumbiner (Night Night, Deathray). Imperial Hearts was mixed by long time friend of the band, producer/engineer, Eric Stenman (Saves the Day, The Comas, The Cab). The California Oranges construct songs filled with, "soaring boy/girl harmonies, rapid-fire licks of squeaky clean and buzz saw dirty guitar work, consistently up-tempo beats, and melodies that would make tone deaf kitten haters want to sing along" --Popmatters. "Power pop has rarely sounded as sweet." --Treblezine. TRACK LIST: 1. Brand New Spine, 2. We've Got Time, 3. Travel Writer, 4. Anywhere USA, 5. I Still Hold On, 6. Silver Shoes, 7. Feel Better, 8. Waiting Is Slow, 9. I Told Grace, 10. Matter Of Consequence, 11. I Won't Let You Back In, 12. When I Sleep.

Centromatic/South San Gabriel
Dual Hawks (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 8TH)
PS, US Keeping track of the distinctions between Centro-matic and South San Gabriel could be a full-time effort, if one were so inclined. Based in Denton, Texas, Centro-matic once titled an album South San Gabriel Songs/Music, only to give a splinter faction of the participating musicians-meaning Centro-matic and more friends-the name South San Gabriel and release that album in Europe under the new band name. South San Gabriel includes the four core members of Centro-matic, plus additional members, but we'll get to that shortly. You might be inclined to say that Centro-matic material tends to be more rockin', with SSG its mellow, literary counterpart, and Will Johnson's solo material as...well...usually (how shall I put this?) skinny-dipping in the abyss-but it would be a gross oversimplification. Each of these projects shares all of the aforementioned respective qualities and more. What is distinctive about the release of Dual Hawks is that we get the chance to hear side-by-side the various ways in which Centro-matic and South San Gabriel complement and play off of each other-sort of the full-length equivalent of a split single.

More Sad Hits [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 15TH)

The album was so strong, that a presumed one-off led to a long relationship w/ Sub Pop Records, who offered to put out future releases after hearing what the duo could accomplish on their own.

Durutti Column, The
Treatise on the Steppenwolf OST (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 8TH)
PS, UK LTM is proud to announce the release of the very first soundtrack recording by The Durutti Column, the legendary Factory Records ensemble formed and fronted by virtuoso guitarist/composer Vini Reilly. Treatise on the Steppenwolf is the soundtrack to the performance piece of the same name by experimental theatre group 12 Stars, written and directed by Gerard McInulty, first staged in Glasgow in May 2003. Freely adapted from the celebrated counter-culture novel by Hermann Hesse, the performance is a portrait a divided character in a state of ongoing conflict. Previously unreleased, the soundtrack CD combines the original studio recordings of the 12 pieces performed by The Durutti Column during the Glasgow run, as well as two bonus live tracks recorded at the event, one featuring spoken-word narrative by cast member Carolyn Allen. The attractive booklet for this 60 minute digital re-master includes background notes, and images from the Glasgow performance in May 2003. Artist biography: Manchester native Vini Reilly formed The Durutti Column in 1978, recording his debut album The Return of the Durutti Column the following year with producer Martin Hannett, a set of delicate instrumental tracks housed in an abrasive sandpaper sleeve. Subsequent landmark albums include LC (1981), Without Mercy (1984), The Guitar & Other Machines (1987), Sex & Death (1993), Fidelity (1996) and Someone Else's Party (2003). A prolific recording artist in his own right (usually with drummer Bruce Mitchell), Reilly has also guested on records by Morrissey, Olive and Holly Johnson. For many years the group sawas managed by the late Anthony H. Wilson, founder of Factory Records.

Fallen Leaves, The
It's Too Late Now (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 1ST)
PS, UK From defining Subway Sect to first & last word in garage punk Rob Symmons is back with The Fallen Leaves. London's very own group THE FALLEN LEAVES was formed in 2004 by Rob Green (Rob built himself a reputation singing at Bernie Rhodes' "Club Left" and by performing with Vic Godard's Subway Sect, notably supporting Siouxsie & The Banshees at the Music Machine in '80), and by original '76-'78 Subway Sect guitarist/founding member Rob Symmons whose distinctive discordant, stinging guitar sound was one of the defining features of the original Subway Sect which he formed with best friend Godard. Memorably Subway Sect's debut gig was at the now historic "100 Club Punk Rock Festival" in Sept '76 where they kicked off the first night, followed by their heroes the Sex Pistols, and The Clash. Subway Sect turned out to be one of the most original and innovative bands to emerge from the festival. Their first single "Nobody's Scared" was released in Mar '78, but unfortunately for Symmons by the time second single "Ambition" came out (Dec '78) Bernie Rhodes (manager of both Subway Sect and The Clash) had persuaded Vic Godard to sack the rest of band, and then somehow lost the band's original album recordings. "Ambition" went straight to the top of the indie charts selling 20,000 copies in a week and stayed there for nine weeks. Symmons' amazingly didn't play guitar again until he and long time friend Green formed The Fallen Leaves. Symmons & Green share a love of 60's garage music, and ever-so stylish vintage suits. THE FALLEN LEAVES' recordings are alive, heated and humming - preferring as they do to use vintage valve amps & mics, and recording live with no overdubs and minimal technology. They hark back to DIY punk days and concentrate on delivering impressive songs and performances.
