The
(r)evolution continues in the wake of ‘Penny Century’… As
The Bear Quartet had written dozens of songs for the years before
being signed, the release of their debut in 1993 only momentarily
pacified the band. Not content to release just one album in 1993,
the band served up two new albums (plus a handful of EPs, revisited
on their recent ‘Early Years’ DCD collection, also
available). The BQ mine and refine their influences (early Teenage
Fanclub, Sonic Youth, Pavement, Swervedriver, Dinosaur Jr) and
wrestle with their personal demons, both lyric and instrumental. ‘Cosy
Den’ and ‘A Family Affair’ are both mesmerizing/melancholic
triple-guitar ascents. If you’re into the guitar-strangling
best of the bands referenced above (and that late-eighties/early-nineties
guitar rock itch needs scratchin’, don’t it?) these
early BQ albums are a treasure waiting to be discovered.
