Tractor
Kings - Homesick (SPUR-CD-006)
CD
$10.00
Long-awaited
new album from reverb-drenched country rockers, led by
local icon Jacob Fleischli, who evokes both Lou Reed and
Bob Dylan in myriad ways. His new band backs him with
a rootsy but grand atmopheric sound, thanks to an evangelical
pedal steel, equal parts terrestrial and extra...terrestrial.
Think "rural cathedral". Recorded by Matt Talbott
(Hum, Centaur) at Great Western Record Recorders. |

Angie
Heaton & The Gentle Tamers - The Rumor
Mill (SPUR-CD-005)
CD
$10.00
This time around Angie shows us just how much a little
bit country (like Marie Osmond), and a little bit rock
n roll (like Marie’s brother Donny) she really is!
Having given us three albums in the past decade that leaned
more on indie-rock (her mid-90s Mud Records releases Calamities
& Restitution and Sparkle),
with a country-ish turn in the new millennium (2005’s
Let It Ride
on Parasol), with The Rumor Mill she and Marie
have left Donny in the dust and gone Dollywood, with an
edge.
10 songs about crushes, death, and being crushed to death;
including a Tex-Mex-ed version of the Trembling Blue Stars’
“Sometimes I Still Feel The Bruise”. |

Steve
Pride and His Blood Kin - Pride On Pride
(SPUR-CD-004)
CD
$7.50
Stunning CD document to the formative years of Steve Pride’s
budding career with the Blood Kin. Delivers a more ragged,
band-based punch than found on his solo Haint, while his
wonderful storytelling remains intact. Line-up includes
Jay (Wilco/Titanic Love Affair) Bennett, Don (Moon Seven
Times/Bowery Boys) Gerard, Brendan (M7X/Poster Children)
Gamble, Bob (Seam/Poster Kids/Hardvark) Rising, and Pat
(Twiggy/Prisonshake) Hawley. “Before there was No
Depression or ‘Alternative Country,’ there
was just fuckin’ good bands like Steve Pride And
His Blood Kin. I liked them so much I stole their guitar
player.” -Jeff Tweedy |

Philo
- The Trouble With Girls (SPUR-CD-003)
CD $7.50
Seriously melodic power pop-meets-country rock dramatics
from Chicago trio. Great stuff with the amplifiers turned
up! Guest vocals by Janet (Freakwater/Eleventh Dream Day)
Bean. A “must-see” live band, so if you’re
in the neighborhood... |
 |
Herring
Boys - Lucky Number Seven (SPUR-CD-002)
CD $7.50
Dazzling, guitar-laden Americana augmented with swooping
violin, viola, cello, strings...Summery power pop deja-vu
and a bit of evangelical rattle and hum anthemica that
reminds us of an unlikely hybrid of The Band, Counting
Crows, Uncle Tupelo, and The Raspberries! |

Steve
Pride - Haint (SPUR-CD-001)
CD $7.50
Somber and resonant country from Asheville, NC/ex-Champaign
songwriter. Equal parts Townes Van Zandt and Jay Farrar
- leaning more toward Son Volt’s soul-searching
moody antiquity than Wilco’s honky-tonking. 11 gentle,
slow-burners, a tumble of hot coals and a flick of sparks
casting towering shadows around rural campfires. Steve
was joined by Wilco’s Jay Bennett on guitar, dobro,
mandolin and vocals; Syd Straw on vocals; Brent Martens
on mandolin, concertina, and guitar; Lonely Trailer’s
Tim Stephens and Moon Seven Times’ Don Gerard on
bass. A wonderful record that’s head and shoulders
above much of the y’all-ternative swill that’s
flooded the marketplace... |
